Car bombing kills Yemen government official; ISIS claims responsibility

Monday, December 7, 2015

Yesterday, at least seven people including Aden, Yemen governor Jaafar Mohammed Saad died in a car bomb attack on their convoy in the city of Aden, according to local officials. An online claim of responsibility on behalf of militant group ISIS called Saad a “tyrant”.

An online post purportedly from the group claimed they detonated the bomb as Saad’s convoy passed where the car was parked. The post shared photos purporting to show Saad’s vehicle passing the parked car, and the following explosion.

People as much as 10km away reported hearing the explosion, and medics said it left victims’ bodies unrecognizable. Photos supposedly of the attack showed a burning, wrecked car. Aden’s Jumhoriya Hospital treated the victims.

The online statement threatened to “chop off” the “rotten heads” of Yemen’s “infidels”, and said more attacks are coming.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who follow Shia Islam, have taken over Yemen’s capital of Sanaa. Until just recently, President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi’s government operated for several months in Saudi Arabia, which has led a coalition involving air strikes against the rebels.

Yemeni fatalities in ISIS-claimed bombings this year number reportedly around 159. Yemeni fatalities since March, when Saudi Arabia’s pro-Hadi airstrikes began, number at least 5,700 according to the United Nations.

Doubts on yesterday’s Italian Lotto and Superenalotto drawing

Thursday, May 5, 2005

The live television broadcast of the Italian Lotto draw, which was used to award the record-breaking 72.090.405,19 Superenalotto prize Tuesday, is reported to have had problems in the drawing procedure.

Only the numbered ball extraction of the “Ruota di Roma” (Wheel of Rome) was shown in the live television broadcast.

Instead of the traditional ball extraction made by a child, a new method based on an automatic machine was used for the “Wheel of Rome” and for the new “National Wheel”. The other “Wheels” were drawn with the traditional system but were not broadcast on public television.

The operation with the new machine worked for the new “National Wheel” but when the operation started for the “Wheel of Rome”, something went wrong. Not all the balls were taken into the box by the compressed air jet. A person tried to solve the problem, but a ball had fallen on the floor. Television images did not make it clear what really happened. Some parts of the procedure may not have been shown on television. The organization stated that the fallen ball was reinserted into the box, but this was not shown on television.

For these reasons, doubts have arisen about the regularity of the draw. Mr. Corbelli, the president of Movimento Diritti Civili, an association for civil rights, has stated that he wants an investigation to be made by the justice system to clarify what really happened and to check if the drawing was regular.

Anti Inflammatory Herbs Like Curamin Can Help Fight Inflammation Pain

Anti Inflammatory Herbs Like Curamin Can Help Fight Inflammation Pain

By Darrell Miller

Anti-inflammatory herbs reduce inflammations by acting on the body mechanics. These Anti-inflammatory herbs are usually applied externally to the affected area or taken internally. They are safe and effective method for treatment of itching, redness, swelling and local discomfort as well as internal inflammation.

Inflammation is, by its nature, a protective response. Some insult or injury will occur, ranging from infection to blunt injury to just plain overuse of a body part, and the body will respond with a group of physical and chemical changes that are designed to isolate the damaged body part and the infecting agent, if there is one. Although the causes are many, inflammation has some common characteristics namely pain, swelling, heat, redness, and loss of function of the part in question. One or all of these signs can indicate inflammation.

Although inflammation normally serves a protective response, it can get out of control and become damaging. Extreme pain can detract from quality of life, and loss of function of a body part can be either inconvenient or deadly, depending on whether we’re talking about the little finger or a vital organ. In some cases, such as allergies and autoimmune disorders, the inflammatory response is basically a mistake, a case of the immune system attacking when it has no real need to.

C-reactive protein, which is used as a measure of the body’s history of inflammation, is a better predictor of heart attacks than cholesterol. So clearly, there are times when it’s important to control inflammation. Tragically, anti-inflammatory drugs, both prescription and over the counter, kill people. Drug industry estimates put the death toll for these drugs in the hundreds of thousands over the past decade. And when you think about it, running a serious risk of death for the chance at reducing inflammation isn’t such a good deal.

This is why natural herbal companies have for years not formulated herbal combinations that have anti-inflammatory properties. Quality brands such as Source Naturals and Europharma can obtain pure raw materials and package some of the finest natural vitamins and herbs on the market today. One such formula is curamin, which has powerful herbs such as Boswellia, turmeric, and amino acids like DLPA. All of which help the body naturally deal with inflammation in the body.

Both Boswellia and turmeric are considered ayurvedic herbs from Asian countries. For centuries traditional medicine practitioners have used these herbs and others to help defend against a large array of disease that strike man kind. These two herbs have more scientific backing then any other to date.

Fortunately, natural herbs have zero side effects unlike those over the counter or prescription drugs. An over dose of herbs can cause intestinal discomfort and diarrhea which is the extent of what may happen. Natural anti-inflammatory formulas come in capsule, tablet, and powder forms. Stop into your local or internet health food store for great anti-inflammatory herbs like Curamin.

Clashes in Nigeria kill hundreds, troops on alert

Monday, March 8, 2010

According to witness and media reports, at least two hundred people in Nigeria have been killed after pastoralists and villagers clashed near the city of Jos, which has been the source of repeated tension between Christians and Muslims.

Local authorities, however, contradicted witness reports, saying that there were eight casualties, as did Mark Lipdo, an aid worker for the Stefanus Foundation charity, who reported that at least a hundred people were dead.

Witness reports state that pastoralists started firing into the air in the village of Dogo Nahawa, about five kilometres south of Jos, at night, and attacked those who emerged from their homes. “They came around three o’clock in the morning and they started shooting into the air. The shooting was just meant to bring people from their houses and then when people came out they started cutting them with machetes,” commented Peter Jang, who lives in the village, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

According to the Agence France-Presse news agency, some of the victims were children.

Acting Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan said he had placed national troops on “red alert” following the clashes. “The acting president has placed all the security forces in the plateau and neighbouring states on red alert so as to stem any cross-border dimensions to this latest conflict,” read a statement released by his office. Armed forces are already present in Jos.

“The security services are on top of the situation,” said Jonathan’s spokesman Ima Niboro in an email statement to the Bloomberg news service.

In January, at least 400 people were killed and a further four thousand injured in the city of Jos after tensions between Christians and Muslims.

GWAR announce Dave Brockie arts foundation

Saturday, April 12, 2014

The surviving members of satirical metal band GWAR yesterday announced a charitable arts foundation in the name of Dave Brockie. Brockie, 50, died last month.

Founding frontman and singer Brockie spent 30 years leading “Earth’s only openly extra-terrestrial rock band”, which actually hailed from Richmond, Virginia. Their obscene lyrics and theatrical live shows brought fame to Brockie, who went by stage name Oderus Urungus, and the fellow Virginia Commonwealth University art students that made up the band.

GWAR unveiled the foundation in a video statement yesterday. Amongst the stated aims are providing support to artists who cannot acquire funds via traditional routes and “the advancement of music, images, letters and performances in the arts”. The foundation is also to preserve Brockie’s body of work and promote his legacy.

“We would like to thank fans and friends for their outpouring of love”, the band said.

A public memorial for Brockie is scheduled for August 15, and the annual GWAR-B-Q is to go ahead the next day. Drawing a line between the stage persona and the man who played it, the band add “Just face it — Oderus would order you to be present and pay tribute to Dave Murray Brockie, his own personal slave!”

Donations can be made at the GWAR-B-Q and via GWAR’s website. The rubber-costumed band remains to publicly decide if they will continue to perform and record. They say the foundation’s first task will be to fund and erect a monument “to provide the world with a place to pay respects to the memory of a very cherished man”.

The History Of Gold And The Gold Market

The History Of Gold And The Gold Market

By Manny Supnic

Gold Yesterday, Cash for Gold Today

For time immemorial, gold has played an important role in lifestyle and economy. As a finite natural resource, its value has never decreased; if anything, it is increasing with time. There is no substitute, and there is no artificial alternative. It is, in the purest sense of the word, one of the most valuable elements on planet earth. It is pure gold.

It was already back in Egypt that gold made a marked appearance. The pharaohs requested tons of gold for cosmetic purposes, to adorn their thrones, clothes, shoes, wives, and the like. Slaves were sent to mine the precious metal under strict supervision. Particularly noteworthy are the gold items discovered by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon in 1922 in the tomb of Tutankhamun. This young pharaoh ruled Egypt in the 14th century B.C. Gold was, and remains, one of the most precious commodities.

The trend continued into the time of the Greeks, where towering works of architecture were adorned with gold carvings. The wealthy sported gold figurines, masks, cups, diadems, and jewelry, plus hundreds of decorated beads and buttons. The Romans, who took many aspects of their culture from the Greeks, also placed a heavy emphasis on all forms of gold, both refined and scrap gold.

And so the gold fever continued through the California Gold Rush, where people grabbed gold for themselves, into our modern day economy. The discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in California sparked the gold rush of 1849-50, and hundreds of mining camps sprang to life as new deposits were discovered. Gold production increased rapidly, as people rapidly looked to sell their newly mined gold. Deposits in the Mother Lode and Grass Valley districts in California and the Comstock Lode in Nevada were discovered during the 1860’s, and the Cripple Creek deposits in Colorado began to produce gold in 1892. By 1905 the Tonopah and Goldfield deposits in Nevada and the Alaskan placer deposits had been discovered, and United States gold production for the first time exceeded 4 million troy ounces a year–a level maintained until 1917.

During World War I and for some years thereafter, the annual production declined to about 2 million ounces. When the price of gold was raised from $20.67 to $35 an ounce in 1934, production increased rapidly and again exceeded the 4-million-ounce level in 1937. Shortly after the start of World War II, gold mines were closed by the War Production Board and not permitted to reopen until 1945.

From the end of World War II through 1983, domestic mine production of gold did not exceed 2 million ounces annually. Since 1985, annual production has risen by 1 million to 1.5 million ounces every year. By the end of 1989, the cumulative output from deposits in the United States since 1792 reached 363 million ounces.

Nations of the world today use gold as a medium of exchange in monetary transactions. A large part of the gold stocks of the United States is stored in the vault of the Fort Knox Bullion Depository. The Depository, located about 30 miles southwest of Louisville, Kentucky, is under the supervision of the Director of the Mint.

Gold in the Depository consists of bars about the size of ordinary building bricks (7 x 3 5/8 x 1 3/4 inches) that weigh about 27.5 pounds each (about 400 troy ounces; 1 troy ounce equals about 1.1 avoirdupois ounces.) They are stored without wrappings in the vault compartments.

Aside from monetary uses, gold is used in jewelry and allied wares, electronic applications, dentistry, the aircraft-aerospace industry, the arts, and medical and chemical fields.

The changes in demand for gold and supply from domestic mines in the past two decades reflect price changes. After the United States deregulated gold in 1971, the price increased markedly, briefly reaching more than $800 per troy ounce in 1980. Since 1980, the price has remained in the range of $320 to $460 per troy ounce. The rapidly rising prices of the 1970’s encouraged both experienced entrepreneurs and amateur prospectors to renew their search for gold. As a result of their efforts, many new mines opened in the 1980’s, accounting for much of the expansion of gold output. The sharp declines in consumption in 1974 and 1980 resulted from reduced demands for gold jewelry (the major use of fabricated gold) and investment products, which in turn reflected rapid price increases in those years.

New fossils from 10 million year old ape found in Ethiopia

Thursday, August 23, 2007

Researchers say that new, ten million-year-old fossils found in Ethiopia, prove that the theory that humans may have evolved from a species of great apes eight million years ago, may not be true, but that humans may have split from apes as long as 10.5 million years ago.

At least nine fossilized teeth, one canine tooth and eight molars, of a previously unknown species of apes found in Africa were discovered by a team of researchers from Ethiopia and Japan who then compared the 3-D make up of the teeth to other fossils that date back as far as 8 million years and found that the fossils are likely a “direct ancestor” of apes currently living in Africa and that the new ape fossils were that of a species of gorilla who ate mostly plants high in fiber.

Current fossils and research say that the evolutionary split from apes to humans occurred at least eight million years ago. The new fossils say that the split may have happened as long as 10.5 million years ago.

“Based on this fossil, that means the split is much earlier than has been anticipated by the molecular evidence. That means everything has to be put back,” said researcher at the Rift Valley Research Service in Ethiopia and a co-author of the study, Berhane Asfaw.

Despite the finds, other researchers are not convinced that the findings are correct.

“It is stretching the evidence to base a time scale for the evolution of the great apes on this new fossil. These structures appear on at least three independent lineages of apes, including gorillas, and they could relate to a dietary shift rather than indicating a new genetic trait,” said a Professor at the London Natural History Museum in the United Kingdom, Peter Andrews who also added, “but the fossil evidence for the evolution of our closest living relatives, the great apes, is almost non-existent.

Researchers have named the newly discovered species Cororapithecus abyssinicus whose remains were found in the Afar Region of Ethiopia, the same place where the remains of Lucy were discovered in 1974.
