The Ferrari California boasts a front-mounted longitudinal 4.3 liter, 4297 cc engine featuring a new direct fuel injection system and a wet sump lubrication. The car maximum power is 460 HP at 7750 rpm with a specific power of 107 HP/liter. The maximum torque is 480 Newton meter at 5000 rpm but already at 2250 rpm the engine gives the 75% of the maximum torque value. The maximum engine speed is 8000 rpm.

It is an innovative hard-top convertible which allows a volume of 260 liters in the boot with the roof down. The hard top opens in 14 seconds with the windows open and in 16 seconds when they are closed. The use of aluminum panels and cast aluminum supporting structure has allowed to considerably optimizing the total weight and the moving masses.

The Ferrari California is fitted with three point pretension seat belts with energy management system for driver and front passenger, two front adaptive airbags which are activated in case of head-on collisions with variable power depending on the impact severity, two side airbags for head protection – which are activated during side collisions -, two injectable roll bars installed behind the rear seats which area actuated in the event of the vehicle roll overs, head collision at higher speed, side or rear collision. The rear seats are fitted with three-point seat belts with energy management system and specific fastening for the installation of child car seats.

The Ferrari California reduces fuel consumption thanks to the introduction of the direct fuel injection system and the optimization of the aerodynamics, at a torque curve providing substantial values and the reduction of the mechanical frictions at low res. The direct fuel injection system consists of a low pressure pump that takes the fuel from the tank and sends it to the two high-pressure pumps. The high pressure pumps, driven by the cam shaft, increase the pressure from 5 bars to a maximum of 200 bars. The pressure in the fuel injector rails depends on the functioning conditions, but it is adjusted by the engine management ECU. The target pressure is reached thanks to proper flow adjustment valves mounted on the two fuel pumps. A pressure sensor for each fuel injector rail checks that the target pressure has been reached.

Cost of maintenance has been reduced by simplifying and dropping the number of maintenance operations and by increasing the duration and quality of the car components.

As every Ferrari, the Ferrari California has a truly unique design approach and technology innovations to achieve indisputable performance and driving experience under all weather conditions. Inquiry about the new V12-660 bph FF or the acclaimed 458 Spider.

James Bond star Roger Moore, 89, dies

Thursday, May 25, 2017

It is the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated.

On Tuesday, British actor Roger Moore, best known for portraying Simon Templar of the 1960s series The Saint and the spy character James Bond, died in Switzerland at the age of 89.

Before his death, Moore fought recently diagnosed cancer. His family confirmed his death on Twitter saying, “It is the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated.”

Other stars paid tribute to Roger Moore via Twitter, including Russell Crowe, Michael Ball, Mia Farrow, Boy George, and Duran Duran, who sang the eponymous theme song for Bond film A View to a Kill featuring Moore as Bond.

Moore was born in Stockwell, South London an only child to his working-class parents on October 14, 1927. During World War II, he and his mother mostly stayed in Amersham, 25 miles from London. Moore left grammar school in 1943 to work.

Moore’s father, a detective sergeant, came to the home of film director Brian Desmond Hurst that had been robbed. Moore was introduced by his father to Hurst and then started his acting career in summer 1944 as an extra in the film Caesar and Cleopatra. Impressed, Hurst helped Moore gain extra parts in two other films and then paid for Moore’s acting studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Moore was assigned to the National Service in 1945 and then, after training, was ranked captain. Afterwards, he appeared in modeling engagements, like appearance in Women’s Own magazine.

Moore arrived in the United States in 1953 and then signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) for mainly supporting roles. He portrayed the male lead in 1956 film Diane. He first appeared on television as the titular character of the late-1950s ITV series Ivanhoe. He later appeared in some western series, like Maverick from 1960 to 1961, replacing James Garner as the lead of the series.

Moore then portrayed Simon Templar, stealing from rich antagonists, in the ITV series The Saint. The series ran 118 episodes from 1962 to 1969. Due to his contract for The Saint, Moore was prevented from being cast as James Bond for the 1962 film Dr. No, which stars Sean Connery, the first actor to portray Bond.

Moore eventually became the third actor to portray Bond, and his first Bond film was the 1973 film Live and Let Die. He would appear again as Bond in six more films: The Man with the Golden Gun, 1974; The Spy Who Loved Me, 1977; Moonraker, 1979; For Your Eyes Only, 1981; Octopussy, 1983; and A View to a Kill, 1985.

In 1991 Moore became a UNICEF goodwill ambassador. His UNICEF work earned him Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the late 1990s. He was knighted in 2003 for that.

Throughout 2000s, Moore performed voiceovers in mostly animated films and made appearances in some other live-action films, like the 2002 film Boat Trip, portraying a gay man resembling Bond. Then he wrote his 2008 autobiography My Word Is My Bond and other books, including memoir One Lucky Bastard and Bond on Bond.

Moore married four times, to four different women. He was survived by his fourth wife, Danish-Swedish multimillionaire Kristina “Kiki” Tholstrup, and his three children.

How Hearing Loss Can Be Solved With Right Ear Instruments

How Hearing Loss Can Be Solved With Right Ear Instruments

How hearing loss can be solved with right ear instruments

by

kenneth buford

In the past week, we began with a 2 part series on hearing loss and noise pollution. This has become the third pollution quandary for many individuals. Persons laboring for long hours in environments that have loud and continuous noise is extremely likely to have either partial or total hearing loss. Machines such as tractors operators that need to be used for long periods of time are the usual culprits. Hearing problems come in after one is exposed to noisy machines that result to ringing in the ears.

But based on the study conducted by industrial hygienists, permanent hearing damage is not likely among those who only get minimal exposure to loud situations such as factory workers. When one manages to keep motorized equipment in mint condition, they will be able to eradicate the harm within the noise of the engine. The muffler that goes wrong must be replaced with a type that has been specified. It is best to ensure that the exhaust pipe is distant from the operator and frequently opens up. An exhaust stack that ends below the top of a cab on tractor or combine is almost certain to cause noise trouble even if muffled.

But then based on a research done through a university’s effort, adding a cab to the test tractor added more to the sound, instead of minimizing it. Putting more insulation to the interior of a conventional tractor cab will truly reduce sound levels significantly. A one inch fiberglass over all metal surfaces that includes the roof area is enough insulation. Double insulating layers were placed on the floor of the cab, only to be followed by the original rubber floor mat afterward.

However, using just any insulating tool might not work. Acoustic property is found to be much better in some materials than in others. One can now easily find sound proofing material kits in the marketplace. With such items, the levels of sound found within existing cabs can be enhanced.

When within fixed working locations, engines, air compressors and other noisy equipment should be moved into a different area, away from the worker. But if the relocation is impossible, the next move should be rotating duties so that not a single person is exposed for more that the allowable time of being in a noisy area and this will allow them to recuperate from the racket as well.

Insulating the workers from the din can be achieved with the use of sound deadening things. But, in most instances, it will be necessary for the worker to protect his ears from the sound around. It can be achieved by way of car stuffing, ear plugs and ear muffs.

Being near large turbocharged engines or when staying in jet airports that are laden with high pitched sounds, ear muffs are the preferred form of protection. Most of the different muff styles are comfy if the fitting is right. But it would be a must that they fit snugly in the ear if they were to create good results. Your hearing does not get diminished as you listen to what’s happening around your equipment. By shutting out loud noise, quieter sounds can flow in better.

Like muffs, noise control ear plugs are very economical, effective and easy to carry around. But be sure that they are fitted by either a doctor or a nurse who can size them in order to maintain their effectiveness and comfort. You will hardly feel them there after the first few minutes of being bothered that it is not natural at all. You can get different sizes for different workers for these are inexpensive.

Ear plugs that are only good for swimming cannot really be used to control sound. They will refuse this offer. Cotton balls in the war is definitely not a good way to control sound.

However, there are substances available from which disposable ear plugs can be made. This is known in another term, Swedish wool. You are up for big trouble when working with noisy machinery without a single form of hearing protection. In the end, you will regret never purchasing any ear protection instruments which are less expensive than what you have to shell out for the many hearing aids and medical treatments you have to go through.

US lawsuit challenges church as polling place

Thursday, November 30, 2006

At its official launch in Washington DC yesterday, the Appignani Humanist Legal Center (AHLC) announced its filing of a lawsuit in Florida challenging the use of a church as a polling place during the recent U.S. midterm elections. The AHLC is representing Jerry Rabinowitz and the action is against Arthur Anderson in his capacity as supervisor of elections for Palm Beach County. But the organization indicates that more lawsuits in other states are expected to follow—all being part of an effort to show that churches are improper polling places because they cannot be religiously and politically neutral and because their use is subject to widespread abuse.

“Churches are currently the most common polling location in America” according to James Hurley, the lead attorney handling the case. Speaking at yesterday’s press conference, Hurley noted that while some churches cover or remove religious symbols in those parts of their facilities used as polling places, not all do so, nor is the practice required everywhere. “When asked, the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections Office said there was no rule requiring removal of such religious icons,” Hurley added.

Rabinowitz’s complaint is that, because he was assigned to vote at Emmanuel Catholic Church in Delray Beach, Florida, he found it necessary when entering the polling place to “walk past a church-sponsored ‘pro-life’ banner framed by multiple giant crosses before even entering the church” to vote. This caused him to be “extremely upset” regarding the religious setting of the polls. According to Hurley, “Rabinowitz observed many religious symbols in plain view” in the voting area. They were “surrounding the election judges and in direct line above the voting machines. These objects included a sign declaring that ‘Each of Us Matters to God,’ multiple crucifixes, a sign that says ‘God, I Make a Difference,’ a large copy of the Lord’s Prayer and a Hail Mary, and a large poster of the Ten Commandments.” When Rabinowitz objected and “asked election officials to remove or cover them for the remainder of the voting” officials allegedly refused to do so.

“This is clearly a violation of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution,” Hurley concluded, because it “has the primary effect of advancing religion.”

Also speaking at the press conference were the president and executive director of the American Humanist Association, the organization behind the new legal center, and Heidi Bruggink, the center’s legal coordinator. Speaking of the AHLC in general, Bruggink reported, “Our attorney roster includes many accomplished and prominent nontheistic attorneys, including Jim McCollum, Wendy Kaminer, and Michael Newdow.” These three are the most famous members of a legal team that “now consists of twenty-seven committed lawyers supported by several law students” and others.

The litigation challenging churches as polling places is a result of volunteer action nationwide by members of the American Humanist Association. “We put out a call to our members whose polling places were churches, asking them to report what they saw,” said the organization’s president, Mel Lipman. And this is what led to the Florida case and others that are expected to follow.

At least eight dead after drone strikes in Pakistan

Thursday, March 18, 2010

According to Pakistani officials, at least ten suspected terrorists were killed in North Waziristan by suspected US drone strikes earlier Wednesday. This is the second US drone attack in the span of two days.

Conflicting media reports say that the first strike consisted of either four or five missiles launched from an unmanned aerial vehicle. They hit a vehicle and a suspected rebel compound in the town of Hamzoni, killing three people.

In the second attack in the Maizar Madakhel area, another five people were reported dead. Pakistani officials say that the area is controlled by Taliban commander Hatiz Gul Bahadur.

Although the US government does not usually confirm drone strikes in Pakistan, analysts say that they are the only ones in the vicinity with access to machinery capable of carrying out said attacks.

On Tuesday, a similar double drone strike killed eight suspected rebels from the same group in the Datta Khel region of Pakistan.

According to the BBC, the US has increased drone strikes recently, and that such attacks have killed several hundred people since August 2008.

Couple takes lawyer hostage and said to have explosives

Tuesday, January 17, 2006

A male and a female took 3 people hostage at a law firm in Statesboro, Georgia. Police blocked off a part of this rural town on Monday. Two suspects , a man and a woman, took a lawyer hostage and claimed that they had explosives.

The suspects, Robert Eugene Brower, 43, a former client of the lawyer, and the female whose name was not released, gave up after demands for cigarettes and food were met and they spoke with a family member.

The standoff lasted for 24 hours and ended, “peacefully,” at around 10AM said Larry Schnall, a spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol.

The last of the 3 hostages to be released was identified as Michael Hostilo. He and the other two hostages were not injured. There is no word on the names of the other hostages.

Earlier reports stated that there had been a “loud boom” coming from the scene at about six o’clock this morning. Authorities have not stated what the booms were.

Police are now inside the building to locate and defuse the explosive device that the suspects claimed to have had.

Initially when police arrived, there were 3 hostages, but 2 had been recently released and were unharmed, said Maggie Fitzgerald, a city spokeswoman. “They are upset with some legal issues within the recent past and want to get those issues resolved. We are doing everything possible to end this situation without anyone being hurt.”

In a news conference Monday night, Police Chief Stan York said Brower was angry about “having been convicted in a criminal case”, in which the lawyer was his court-appointed attorney. York did not elaborate on the demands of the hostage-takers, other than saying, “they only wanted to call attention to the case.”

Georgia State Trooper Larry Schnall, a spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol, said a SWAT team was sent to the scene.

This morning authorities convinced the two suspects to give-up, but “incidents leading to an escalation resulted in some gunfire,” Stan York in a press conference just moments ago. No one was hurt in the brief eruption of gunfire.

Police later said when the suspects tried to surrender they became apprehensive and made a threatening gesture prompting authorities to draw their guns and open fire.

The standoff began at around 9AM on Monday.

Looking For A Safe Investment? Try A Certificate Of Deposit

Looking For A Safe Investment? Try A Certificate Of Deposit

By James Dimmitt

If you are looking for a safe investment and you have between $100 -$1,000 to invest, you should consider a certificate of deposit or CD. When purchased through a bank, CD’s are federally insured up to $100,000.

When you invest in a certificate of deposit, you are lending your money to the bank for a set period of time at a fixed rate of interest. At the end of that time period, the bank pays you back your investment with the interest you’ve earned. The annual interest earned is reflected by the annual percentage yield or APY.

There are several details to consider before investing in a CD. First, find out when the CD will mature? Banks offer certificates of deposit with maturities ranging from 3-months to 10-years or more. Figure out how much to safely invest and how long you feel you can leave that money alone so that it earns interest. Also, make sure you get the maturity date in writing.

Second, you’ll want to know the annual percentage rate (APR) you’ll earn on your investment. Investing larger sums for longer terms usually earns the best interest. However, even a small investment can earn you higher interest than a traditional passbook savings account.

Next, find out how the interest is compounded – daily, monthly, or annually? Daily compounding is best because it earns you more interest. You can shop for the best CD rates at bankrate.com or check with your personal banker.

Shopping on the internet, I found rates for a $1,000 1-year CD in my local area ranging from 2.96 to 3.97 APR and a 3.00 to 4.05 APY respectively. So if I invested $1,000 at 2.96 APR, at the end of 12 months I’d get paid $1,030.00 by the bank (figures computed with interest compounded monthly). That same $1,000 invested at a rate of 3.97 APR would return $1040.43.

Interest rates are usually locked in for the term of the CD, although some banks allow you to take advantage of higher interest rates by converting your CD. This type of CD is called a ‘step up’ CD. Generally, banks will only let you ‘step up’ once during the term of the CD.

What happens if you withdraw your money before the certificate of deposit matures? Your bank will impose an early withdrawal penalty, which can vary depending upon the maturity date and the amount invested. It’s important to invest only money you can truly afford to leave alone for the term of the CD.

As with any investment, make sure you understand all the terms, fees, and any penalties before you purchase.

China calls Japan’s gas drilling plan ‘a serious provocation’

Thursday, April 14, 2005

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters that China is protesting Japan’s plan to allow drilling for gas and oil in disputed waters in the East China Sea, characterizing the move as “a serious provocation”.

On Wednesday, Japan announced that they would begin processing applications to allow oil and gas drilling firms to explore in the disputed area, east of the “demarcation line” which has held up applications to drill in the area for decades.

“The Chinese and Japanese positions differ on that matter, but we need to continue talks from a big point of view, without inflaming conflicts, and to turn the sea of conflict into a sea of coordination,” Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi told a news conference.

Qin Gang said that China reserved “the right to take further reaction,” according to Xinhua.

“China has never ever recognized and will never recognize the demarcation line,” Qin told reporters.

Japan’s exploration of the disputed zone could start early next month, and will be defended by Japanese military vessels, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
