Stockholm chief prosecutor quashes arrest warrant for Wikileaks editor-in-chief

Saturday, August 21, 2010

The arrest warrant issued for Wikileaks’ editor-in-chief Julian Assange has been quashed by Stockholm Chief Prosecutor Eva Finné, who said in a press release “I am of the opinion that there is no reason to suspect that he has committed a rape.” The press officer of the Swedish Prosecution Authority says that he is still suspected of molestation, and that neither police nor prosecutors have yet been able to contact Assange. Assange had this morning said that he was going to hand himself in to police but also said that the accusations against him were false. The investigation is continuing.

A warrant for Assange’s arrest was issued on Friday evening after the Stockholm police informed prosecutors that he had been accused of rape. According to Expressen’s sources two women between 20 and 30 years old are the alleged victims. Police and prosecutor Maria Häljebo Kjellstrand told Swedish news agency TT that the alleged molestation took place in Stockholm on the night of 13–14 August and the alleged rape happened “later” in Enköping. (Expressen’s sources say the alleged rape occurred on Tuesday.) Beyond that they have refused to comment. Sources told Expressen that the two women knew each other and “knew that they had been the victims of the same thing”. A source says that the women were afraid of Assange’s “position of power” and had been reluctant to make a formal report to the police. However, on Sunday one of his accusers was interviewed by Aftonbladet and denied that they were scared of Assange: “It is wrong to say that we were frightened of Assange and that we hadn’t wanted to report him for that reason. He’s not violent and I do not feel threatened by him.”

Assange was in Sweden last week to talk about his work and to defend Wikileaks’ publication of the Afghan War Diary, a set of tens of thousands of secret US military documents whose publication has angered the Pentagon and the Obama administration. He had also met Swedish Pirate Party leader Rickard Falkvinge and signed a deal in which the party agreed to provide Wikileaks with server space. The Pirate Party is continuing its cooperation with Wikileaks despite the allegations against Assange.

Assange has denied the allegations in e-mails to Swedish media and on Wikileaks’ Twitter feed, saying “the charges are without basis and their issue at this moment is deeply disturbing.” An official statement on the Wikileaks blog says: “We are deeply concerned about the seriousness of these allegations. We the people behind WikiLeaks think highly of Julian and he has our full support. While Julian is focusing on his defenses and clearing his name, WikiLeaks will be continuing its regular operations.”

Medal-seeking Spanish men arrive at 2014 Goalball World Championships

Sunday, June 29, 2014

Spain’s men’s national goalball team arrived in Espoo, Finland Friday for the start of the 2014 IBSA Goalball World Championships. The team comes into the tournament with the goal of securing a medal, which would qualify them for the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. The team missed the 2012 Summer Paralympics.

Head coach Francisco Monreal said, “The objective is to reach the medal round, and qualify directly for the 2016 Games, but we need to be realistic and not think game by game, we can get a surprise. […] The competition will be decided in one game, head or tails, where it doesn’t matter what happened before. ((es))Spanish language: ?el objetivo previsto es alcanzar las medallas y clasificarnos directamente para los Juegos de 2016, pero hay que ser realistas y como no vayamos pensando partido a partido, nos podemos llevar una sorpresa. […] La competición se decidirá en un partido a cara o cruz, como son los cruces de cuartos, y donde no sirve de nada lo realizado en la primera fase

Coming into the competition, the team was ranked eleventh in the world based on the IBSA Unofficial rankings published late last month, down one spot from the April rankings. The team is scheduled to play their first game against the ninth ranked United States men’s team on Monday morning, before playing twenty-first ranked Germany later in the afternoon. Their other scheduled competitors in pool play are top ranked Iran, third ranked Algeria, seventh ranked Finland, twelfth ranked Czech Republic and twentieth ranked Ukraine. The team needs to finish in the top four in their group to advance to the second round.

The team’s roster includes Jose Daniel Fernández, Cristian Santamaria, Félix Vargas, Roman Martínez, Jesús Santana, and Javier Serrato. They are led by head coach Monreal, with assistant coach Carles Estrany and physiotherapist José Bravo. The team is drawn from around the country, with Santana playing for a club in the Canary Islands, Serrato playing for Valencia, Fernández for Madrid area Chamartín, Santamaría for Cantabria, Vargas coming from Barcelona and Martínez from Aragón.

Absent from the 2012 Summer Paralympics, the last major international competition the team competed in was the 2010 Goalball World Championships in Sheffield, England where the team finished fifth. In last year’s IBSA European Goalball Championships in Turkey, the team finished second, behind World Championship hosts and Paralympic gold medalists Finland.

Goalball was created in 1946, exclusively for people with a visual disability and designed to help with the rehabilitation of veterans returning from World War II. Play in the Paralympics consists of two twelve-minute periods, with a three minute break between halves. Players are blindfolded to ensure all are equally visually handicapped on-court, and the game can be stopped to ensure goggles are properly fitted. Standing in front of a long goal, they throw the ball at the opposition team’s net who in turn try to block it by listening to the ball, which contains a bell, and using their bodies to prevent the ball from going in. The audience is asked to remain silent during play.

Earth 4 Energy Explores Non Fossil Fuel Energy

Earth 4 Energy Explores Non Fossil Fuel Energy

Submitted by: Rick Williamson

Earth 4 Energy allows homeowners to take the first step in breaking free of dependence on overpriced natural gas and electricity. The eBook comes in a step-by-step, easy to read guide so that even the most novice homeowners will have no trouble in their energy generation efforts. We all should be using the earth as our energy source because it is one of the best ways to save on energy. Unfortunately, most of us are unaware of the potential that our earth holds. This is sad because it is now easy to take advantage of the earth for its power.

Earth 4 Energy not only shows you how to harness the power of solar energy, it also instructs homeowners on how to harness other renewable energies. One important fact to note is that Earth 4 Energy is only available online through a pdf format; you cannot go to your local brick and mortar bookstore to purchase this guide.

Within a few hours, any home in the world can begin to run on free solar power. The guide shows through simple English (no technical jargon) and descriptive diagrams on how to harness the power of the sun using materials from your local hardware store. The creator of the guide has created countless solar panels for under $200 a piece. Using the power he has saved on his home’s electricity and heating bills, the panels have already paid for themselves within a few short months of use.

Depending on how ambitious of an energy saver you are, it is possible to have virtually all your home’s power generated from just the solar panels you learned about in Earth 4 Energy. You can also take these portable panels with you on camping trips so that you and your family can enjoy the basic amenities made available by electricity. In case of an emergency, the electricity provided by the panels can be used to power cell phones and radios.

Not only does Swerd, the creator of Earth 4 Energy, show how you can benefit from the power of the sun, he also allows energy connoisseurs to exploit wind power. Much like that of the solar panels, homemade windmills can be made from basic hardware store products. However, unlike solar panels, these windmills can be created for less than a measly $100 using Swerd’s construction methods. With your home running on both solar and wind power, your energy independence and monetary savings will being to skyrocket. You will no longer go to sleep worrying how expensive the price of natural gas or electricity will be in just a few short months.

This do it yourself green energy guide shows every step of the process of making renewable power sources and it puts it into one booklet. You can be sure that the process of using the earth for power will be both quick and easy. In not more than two days time you can be saving money from creating your own source of wind or solar power. The possibilities are limitless when it comes to our earth as a energy source.

Claim your energy independence and refuse to consume overpriced gas and electricity from today’s conglomerates. Allow Earth 4 Energy to assist you in breaking away from the stranglehold that the world’s governments and economies have put on the price of this modern necessity.

UN nuclear chief says negotiations with Iran at ‘dead end’

Friday, November 27, 2009

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, said earlier on Thursday that the organization has reached a “dead end” in a probe into Iran’s nuclear program. The IAEA’s board is meeting to consider a resolution condemning Iran’s nuclear program.File:Elbaradei.png

In remarks to the IAEA’s board, ElBaradei expressed frustration over Iran’s failure to cooperate with the Vienna-based agency. ElBaradei leaves office in a few days, at the end of this November, and his remarks have grown sharply more critical of Iran in recent months.

Today, he said he was disappointed that Iran had not agreed on a deal to further enrich its uranium overseas. The deal has the support of the United States, Russia and France and it aims to provide a safeguard that Iran’s uranium is not being used to make a nuclear weapon.

“It is now well over a year since the agency was last able to engage Iran in discussions about these outstanding issues. We have effectively reached a dead end, unless Iran engages fully with us,” he commented.

“In my view the proposed agreement presents a unique opportunity after many years of animosity and hostility to address a humanitarian need and create a space for negotiation. This opportunity should be seized and it would be highly regrettable if it was missed,” he said.

ElBaradei’s comments come as the IAEA board is considering a draft resolution on Iran. According to press reports, the draft urges Iran to stop construction of the uranium enrichment site, and to confirm that it has no other hidden nuclear activities. Diplomats are reportedly confident the measure will be passed, but Iran’s ambassador to the IAEA told a German newspaper that Tehran would reduce its cooperation with the IAEA to a minimum if that happens.

Some members of the international community believe that Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon; Tehran, however, maintains that its efforts are for peaceful purposes only.

Disney buys Pixar

Tuesday, January 24, 2006

The Walt Disney Company has finalized a US$7.4 billion deal to acquire its long-time partner Pixar in an all stock buy-out. The deal will make Steve Jobs, current Pixar and Apple CEO, Disney’s largest shareholder with about 7% (valued at over $3.5 billion) and a member of the board of directors.

The merger was speculated all day Tuesday on the stock market and the announcement came just after trading closed for the day. Terms of the merger include Pixar’s John Lasseter becoming Disney’s new chief creative officer in charge of animation at the combined Disney-Pixar Animation Studios, as well as principal creative advisor at Walt Disney Imagineering, the unit of the company responsible for research and development of Disney theme parks worldwide.

Jobs purchased what became Pixar for $10 million in 1986 from George Lucas’s computer animation division at Lucasfilm. Toy Story, its first feature film, came a decade later, and began a long string of animation hits, including Finding Nemo. Such successes proved to be increasingly elusive for Disney to manage on its own. The partnership between the two studios had become shaky in recent years, as former Disney head Michael Eisner clashed with Jobs over the renewal terms of their agreement. In 2003, prior to his dismissal from Disney, Eisner infuriated Pixar’s creative team by predicting Finding Nemo would be a failure. Steve Jobs broke off negotiations in January 2004, having told one executive previously, “I don’t see how the relationship can continue as long as Eisner is there.”

This sport, however, besides having a long history also has a large following of enthusiasts who practice regularly and follow the world championships and international. Born as an official sport in Italy in 1861, its roots in the mists of time and are related to military practice. Famous literary examples are those that can be found in the Odyssey and into the timeless legend of Robin Hood which is periodically repeated even in the contemporary movies.

At the national level who practice this sport refers to various TSN or the National Shooting, which in turn refer UITS, namely the Italian Union of archery, which are the only institutions that can grant permission to detent sporting weapons. Many times the TSN are just used for training the police and within them educate future officers, policemen and soldiers. The authorization to possess firearms, it remains the prerogative of the military genius that the grants after thorough checks of the applicant. The classic shooting is to attack a target, more or less distant, with the aid of firearms of different sizes and capacities.

The sites, known universally as polygons, where you can practice this sport can be both state and private but must respond to the particular feature since that site is safe and suitable for these types of sports. First, these areas must be covered entirely of materials which absorb sound insulation so that noise is not perceived outside the room. Besides the reduction of noise outside the polygons must be fully equipped to protect the hearing abilities of the users of these sites so they must be properly equipped with sound insulation material in them too so that the shots are not received from a location to another.

A variant of the sport became Olympic sport and is practiced as an amateur in many circles is equipped of skeet shooting. As the shooting are being used more weapons, but only a Shotguns only that the objective is not to hit a static target but to hit a target, called for just shooting, moving and a certain distance. Among the three Olympic disciplines are the ways in which this sport is practiced: Olympic Trap, skeet and double tramp, each of which has special characteristics in terms of how place and time of development. Having to be performed outside the sport must be practiced only in places devoted solely to it as more than noise pollution would be a serious risk to the safety of persons. The constraints are so restrictive and, in addition to the precise definition of places, especially in cases of premises located close to the residential area is also safeguarded the health of these acoustic location. This is indeed why many circles of clay pigeon shooting are located in open countryside and surrounded by dunes land or deadening.

Tottenham Hotspur travelled to Upton Park earlier today to face West Ham United, currently the bottom team in the table. West Ham were 10 points adrift of relegation safety at kickoff, and desperately needed points to secure a stay in the Premiership for next season. Tottenham on the other hand have been enjoying a good run of play as of late, and had a chance to jump above Portsmouth into 8th position in the Premiership.West Ham started strongly in the match, desperately trying to bring the game to Tottenham with the support of their home fans urging them on. West Ham’s first effort came in the second minute, but keeper Paul Robinson was able to beat away the shot of Mark Noble. Things took a downturn for the Hammers several minutes later, when Matthew Upson was forced off the pitch after aggravating a calf injury, and was replaced by Calum Davenport. Dimitar Berbatov then had two great chances for Tottenham, as he went one on one with keeper Robert Green, but Green was able to stop the Bulgarians attempts both times. West Ham continued to press, and were rewarded with a goal on 16 minutes. Paul Konchesky’s pass was chested down by Argentinian Carlos Tevez, and Mark Noble half-volleyed the ball into the back of the net. Tottenham nearly got an equilizer only minutes later after a defensive error by West Ham, but Berbatov’s shot was again saved by Green. More chances came for both sides in the forms of Defoe for Tottenham and Harewood for West Ham, but the next goal would come through the young Carlos Tevez. Michael Dawson fouled the Argintinian on the outside of the 18 yard box, and Tevez curved the ensuing free kick in under the crossbar. The goal was Teves’ first since joining West Ham at the beginning of the season. He was booked for his goal celebration as he ripped off his shirt and ran into a group of cheering fans.Tottenham made a change to start the second half, substituting Tom Huddlestone for Hossam Ghaly, and Huddlestones prescence helped Tottenham to control the midfield. They used their control to its potential, and Aaron Lennon was able to earn a penalty after being brought down by Lee Bowyer in the area. Jermain Defoe stepped up and slotted the ball past Green to cut the Hammers lead in half. Spurs continued to press for an equilizer, and got it in the 63 minute as Lennon flicked a Berbatov cross into the path of Tainio, and the Finnish international volleyed the ball past Green. The tying goal seemed to wake West Ham up, and Bobby Zamora and Keppa Blanco were added to the mix to try and save the 3 points for the home side. West Ham got their goal, and Tevez was involved again as his cross was headed home by substitute Zamora. As 90 minutes approached, Tottenham won a free kick on the edge of the box, and Dimitar Berbatov stepped up to the plate. Several of Berbatov’s attempts had been blocked by keeper Green already, but he would not be denied this time as he curled the ball into the top left corner, leaving the goalie helpless. Tevez again threatened Tottenhams goal, but his shot flew just wide. West Ham would be left to rue their missed chances when Defoe’s shot was parried by Green, but the ball was tapped in by Canadian Paul Stalteri, giving the visitors their first lead of the game, and soon earning them all 3 points. The goal came just over 5 minutes into stoppage time, and there was no chance left for West Ham to equilize.West Ham will continue their battle to stay in the Premiership in two weeks time against Blackburn, while Tottenham is due for an UEFA cup battle against Braga.
