Explosion at University of Missouri-Columbia leaves four injured

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

An explosion at the University of Missouri-Columbia (Mizzou) on Monday afternoon left four people injured, authorities say.

The explosion occurred in a science laboratory in Schweitzer Hall around 2:20 p.m. CDT (1920 UTC) Monday. The source of the explosion was first thought to have been a 2,000-pound (907.2-kilogramme) hydrogen tank, but fire officials later said that this was not the case. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation by the Columbia Fire Department.

The Columbia Fire Department arrived at Schweitzer Hall after a report of a structure fire, but found that most of the fire had already been extinguished by the building’s fire sprinkler system. The remaining flames were put out by firefighters, one of whom said it looked as if “a bomb went off in the lab”.

Of the four hurt in the blast, one was a research scientist, one a graduate student, and the other two postdoctoral fellows. Three were treated for mild injuries and released from University Hospital, while the fourth was in good condition after being taken to the hospital’s burn unit for life-threatening injuries. A school spokesperson said that the university was not allowed to release the names of the victims.

Authorities initially believed that a large container of hydrogen gas had exploded, but investigators later said that the tank was intact. Fire officials also retracted an earlier statement that said the incident had been a result of human error. In a Monday night news release, the fire department said that lab workers had turned on the hydrogen but did not recognize warning signs indicating a dangerously high level of hydrogen gas in the lab, so they left the gas supply running. The report said the explosion occurred after the gas reached a source of ignition. However, the department said Tuesday that the investigation into the explosion is still ongoing and that they were not certain human error was the cause.

The investigation should determine the cost of repairs for the building, as well as whether the school should implement new procedures to avoid similar incidents in the future. The lab where the explosion took place will be totally rebuilt.

Schweitzer Hall houses Mizzou’s biochemistry department, which is part of the medical and agricultural programs. The building’s single classroom is located in the basement and was not in use at the time. The explosion happened on a third-story lab assigned to Judy Wall, a university professor, who was in her office across from the lab during the incident and referred inquiries to the news bureau. Other labs in the building were not disturbed, and Schweitzer Hall was established to be structurally sound, although nearly twenty windows had been shattered from the blast. The building reopened Tuesday for researchers to continue working.

Why You Need A Bad Credit Mobile Home Loan

Why You Need A Bad Credit Mobile Home Loan

By Benjamin Robert Ehinger

What can a Bad Credit Mobile Home Loan Provide for You?

Getting a bad credit mobile home loan is not all that hard, but you can use it for many things as well. This is a great way to become independent without taking on a huge mortgage. Mobile homes are much cheaper than getting a full house, which is a great thing when you cannot afford a home yet. They still have some good value to them and it is certainly better than paying rent.

Are you one of the many people around that have bad credit? Do you still need a mobile home loan even though you know your credit is not good? There are lenders that are willing to work with those that have bad credit and more lenders are lowering their standards because of the lack of clients with good credit. Here are a few different options when it comes to a bad credit mobile home loan.

A Few Options for a Bad Credit Mobile Home Loan

First, you might as well throw the bank right out of the equation because you will get nowhere with the bank unless you have good credit. They will not even consider you unless you have a 650 credit score or better. So cross the banks off your list unless you have a good sized retirement account or other investment that you can borrow against.

Second, you can use a non-conventional lender, but they are a bit difficult to find. Know that if you start to look for a loan and you get turned down a number of times by mortgage companies because of your home being a mobile home, then you need to keep trying. Not all mortgage companies or lenders will work with mobile homes and some will only work with you if you own the land it is on. Just be patient and be honest with the lender and you will find the right one for you.

Your last option is to go the buy here pay here route. This is good for those of you that have such bad credit that nobody else would even think about helping you. Buy here pay here mobile home parks will take any type of credit and they will give you a bad credit mobile home loan without any hassle. Just make sure you are paying on time and expect to pay a much higher interest rate than if you were to use a lender.

Something Else to Know about a Bad Credit Mobile Home Loan

There is one more thing you should know about a bad credit mobile home loan. This type of loan can help you to build credit and have an asset that you can use when necessary. Having an actual home would be great, but when you know you cannot afford an actual home you can go with a mobile home.

If you take the time to make your mobile home a real place to live for yourself, then you will have an actual home for you and your family. This is a great way to become independent and work towards a larger home. It is also a great way to add an asset that you can use to your life and you can start with a bad credit mobile home loan.

Russia asks Iceland for details of bank rescue plan before giving loan

Saturday, October 18, 2008

Russia has requested Iceland give them more details of the island nation’s plan to rescue the banking sector and thus the entire national economy before granting them a loan.

Two weeks ago, Iceland’s banking sector collapsed and was largely nationalised. Icelandic banks are in significantly more debt than the country can afford, and the nation may seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund. A decision on whether to involve the IMF is due within a week.

As for Russia, a senior Russian government source is reported by Reuters as having said “At the current moment, we do not yet have enough reasons to give them credit. We did not refuse. We are continuing the talks.” Forbes quoted him as having also said “‘We asked them to collect more information and present a rescue plan for the banking system.”

Meanwhile, there is some optimism in Iceland over the economy. It is hoped by authorities that the lower exchange rate for the króna means that more tourists will be attracted. Bars and restaurants are also doing well. The manager of one bar explained: “Actually, when people get depressed they drink more.”

UK drivers urged not to panic buy during delivery strikes

Friday, June 13, 2008

British drivers have been urged not to panic buy fuel because of the 4-day walkout by delivery drivers working for companies delivering to Shell petrol stations. The 600 workers have walked out over pay disagreements, wanting an increase to their current pay of £36,500, however their union Unite turned down a last-minute offer of £41,500.

Hoyer UK, which employs tanker drivers for Shell, said, “We extended our offer to the very limits that our business could sustain.” However Unite said in a press release that, “this dispute could have been resolved if Shell had advanced a fraction of the billions of pounds in profit they make every month”, continuing to say, “one of the world’s richest companies is prepared to play Pontius Pilate and see the British public inconvenienced rather than settle this dispute for a sum smaller than the chairman’s pay increase last year”

Shell admitted that the walkout could leave some of its 1,000 forecourts without fuel, but the UK Petrol Industry Association, which represent oil refiners, said that forecourts would have around 4 days of supply, maintaining usual stocking levels. Shell also commented that the strike impact would be “significant”, as the company runs around 1 in 10 of all petrol stations in the UK.

British Business Secretary, John Hutton, said that “the strike, which will have a disproportionate effect on people in Britain, cannot be justified,” and urged both sides to resume negotiations in order to settle the dispute. “We have been working closely with industry to put in place detailed contingency plans to reduce as far as possible the disruption for the driving public,” he added. Unite’s press release also confirms that “provision has been made for fire, police and the emergency services.”

Tanker drivers on strike have set up picket lines at many of Shell’s UK refineries, including those in Stanlow, Avonmouth, Plymouth, Pembroke, Cardiff, Kingsbury, Basildon, Grangemouth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Jarrow and Luton Airport.

How Your Diet Affects Your Dental Health}

How Your Diet Affects Your Dental Health}

Submitted by: Stewart Wrighter

Everyone knows their health is connected to everything they do. Exercising too little or too much plays a role in how healthy you feel; the same as stress, your diet and your state of mind play a role. In addition to your overall well-being, what you eat plays a role in the condition of your mouth. Your oral health is directly affected by what you eat every day. If you have concerns about your diet and how it is affecting your oral health, talk to your dentist about it. He or she will be able to examine your mouth and determine how your diet is affecting your teeth. Dentistry is very helpful when it comes to designing a diet that will help you maintain good oral health. There are a few tips everyone should know, regardless of the condition of your mouth. You can limit or eliminate certain things or add healthy things to your diet. You will not only see a difference in the health of your mouth, you will notice you feel better overall.

Coffee and tea are two of the most important things to limit if you are trying to keep your teeth white. Dark teas and coffee tend to discolor your teeth and leave them looking gray or yellow. If you must enjoy either drink, consider drinking through a straw. This prevents the liquid from covering your teeth. Those who prefer to drink their beverages hot and would rather not deal with a straw should limit how much of the beverage they drink. Occasionally, neither coffee nor tea will do much damage.

Sugar is another trouble maker when it comes to your oral health. The sugar causes tooth decay. The more sweets you eat, the more likely you are to have cavities. You should limit the amount of sweets you eat for your dental health and your overall health. However, when you occasionally indulge, brush your teeth soon after. This will wash away the sugar and prevent it from causing decay.

Just as you would want to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables for overall health, these foods help your teeth. The nutrients and vitamins in fruits and vegetables help your teeth stay strong. Usually, if something is healthy for you, it will be good for your oral health.

The one exception is citrus fruit. Though citrus is not bad for your oral health, too much of it can chip away at the enamel on your teeth. This is especially true in the case of citrus juices because the combination of sugar and acid affects the tooth enamel. Again, you can enjoy the beverage through a straw or limit you intake. Orange and pineapple juice, lemonade and grapefruit juice will not be terrible for your mouth, but avoid drinking them every single day or just enjoy a small glass in the morning. Though there are plenty of vitamins and minerals in the juice, too much of a good thing might wreak havoc in your mouth.

Home of controversial book publisher set ablaze

Four people have been arrested on terrorism charges in Islington, London, England, after a suspected petrol bombing on the house of Martin Rynja, owner of book publishing company Gibson Square.

His company recently sparked controversy after buying the rights to publish The Jewel of Medina, a work of fiction by Sherry Jones depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad and his child bride, Aisha.

The bombing, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, led to the evacuation of the £2.5 million property in Lonsdale Square. Three men, aged 22, 30 and 40, were arrested at 2:25am BST by armed officers, two in Lonsdale Square, and one after being stopped near Angel tube station.

Police comments suggested that the trio had been under surveillance, and that they had advance knowledge of the plot and simply waited for the arsonists to strike, before arresting them.

On Saturday, a woman was arrested for obstructing police during their searches of four addresses – two in Walthamstow, and two in Ilford and Forest Gate.

Speaking earlier this month, Mr Rynja said that “The Jewel of Medina has become an important barometer of our time. As an independent publishing company, we feel strongly that we should not be afraid of the consequences of debate.” Ms Jones commented that she did not intend for her novel to be offensive to Islam. She noted that she “[has] deliberately and consciously written respectfully about Islam and Muhammad.” She “envisaged that [her] book would be a bridge builder” between Islam and the western world.

Former Trump advisor, Paul Manafort, receives second sentence in U.S. Federal Court

Friday, March 15, 2019

A former advisor for U.S. President Donald Trump was sentenced in U.S. Federal Court on Wednesday. Paul Manafort was sentenced by Judge Amy Berman Jackson to 73 months in federal prison and to also pay financial restitution to the Internal Revenue Service in the amount of US$6.16 million.

Manafort’s charges involved unregistered foreign lobbying and witness tampering. Judge Jackson clarified in the proceedings that her sentencing decisions were not connected to or impacted by the sentence Manafort received in a separate case for which Manafort was sentenced last week. However, as part of her admonition, Judge Jackson stated, “Saying I’m sorry I got caught is not an inspiring plea for leniency.”

In last week’s action, another federal judge sentenced Manafort to a 47 month prison term. After his conviction in that case last summer, Manafort agreed to help with Robert Mueller’s investigation. However, some months later, the judge in that case determined Manafort had lied and violated that deal. That conviction was related to Manafort’s lobbying business.

In 2018, while preparing for his first trial, Manafort was kept in solitary confinement at least 23 hours per day. In that trial, he faced 18 counts of fraud pertaining to his financial reporting for his pay while working on a foreign campaign in Ukraine.
