Video hosting website Stage6 to shut down

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

American corporation DivX, Inc. announced on Monday that it will shut its Stage6 website that hosts videos made by users. The shutdown will take effect on February 28, 2008 and is because the firm no longer have the resources to keep it online.

“Why are we shutting the service down? Well, the short answer is that the continued operation of Stage6 is a very expensive enterprise that requires an enormous amount of attention and resources that we are not in a position to continue to provide. There are a lot of other details involved, but at the end of the day it’s really as simple as that,” said Tom, who is also known as ‘Spinner’ in the statement on the website and an employee of DivX, Inc. the San Diego, California-based host of the webservice.

In October 2007, Universal Music Group filed a federal lawsuit against DivX, Inc. for copyright infringement after users posted hundreds of music videos on Stage6.

Chief Executive Kevin Hell said in a statement: “By no longer expending resources on Stage6, we sharpen our focus on creating a global standard for digital video.”

Videos can no longer be uploaded, but will be able to be watched and downloaded until February 28. Stage6 made its debut in 2006. It hosted movie clips, television shows and music videos along with content made by the site’s users in the popular DivX codec.

A few home improvement projects that have been well thought out would benefit any home. You don\’t need to have a huge budget or be especially handy to make some serious improvements in your home. You simply need to employ a little creativity in a few important areas and we\’ll offer some suggestions in this article that should provide you with a good starting point.

Most houses either have an attic or a basement or even both but rarely are these areas used to their full potential. So, why not make an office or studio out of your basement or attic? There are many things these spaces could become, from an additional bedroom for a child to a space you can rent out that can make you a little extra money. You\’ve already got the ceiling, floor and walls, which are the most important parts of a room. If you want it to become a living space, it will likely require some work and remodeling. You might have to air out a damp basement, clean moldy surfaces, add kitchen facilities or plumbing. These jobs will be worth the work in the end because of the benefits you will derive from them.

If you want a nicer garden and some additional shade and private areas, you can use things like shrubs, trees and hedges to do this. Planting some shrubs or trees in your garden will offer a lot of benefits, including protecting you from the sun and wind, adding a little beauty to the space as well as acting like an absorbent for excessive moisture in the atmosphere. Depending on your climate, you may want to consider planting fruit trees so you can enjoy picking edible fruit from your own backyard. You could plant living fence of hedges around your yard if you are looking for more privacy. It\’s more attractive than having a wall built and it can consist of different types of plants, shrubs or small trees that form a barrier between your home and the world.

The right counter-tops in your kitchen can make a big difference, leading to a great look for your kitchen and making cooking more enjoyable for you. When visiting a new house, people zone in on the kitchen first and for most families it\’s the place where the majority of social interaction takes place. A great material for your counter-tops is ceramic tile, which is available in many textures and colors. One advantage to ceramic tiles is that they are stain and moisture resistant, which makes them perfect for the kitchen. When you put in new counter-tops, you have to consider how they will fit in with the rest of your d cor.

You can give your home a new look, improve its comfort, energy efficiency and monetary value with the aforementioned home improvement ideas. The first key to a successful home improvement project is getting started! Make this the year you start converting your home into what you dream of, so put a plan together, get the right stuff or call the right builder.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Microsoft extends warranty for all Xbox 360s

Saturday, December 23, 2006

On December 22, 2006 Microsoft has announced that it has extended its warranty for all Xbox 360 video game consoles to one year in the United States. While this one year warranty applies to all Xbox 360 software as well, Xbox 360 accessories will still carry their original 90 day warranty.

According to a statement by Microsoft:

“Customers that experience hardware issues with their Xbox 360 within one year of purchase will have their consoles repaired at no cost. Moreover, the new warranty policy is retroactive, so consumers that may have already paid for out-of-warranty Xbox 360 repair within one year of the console’s purchase will be eligible for reimbursement of their console repair charges.”

This extension should help ease customers’ minds who have been concerned with the Xbox 360’s reputation for hardware failures. A partial list of hardware issues can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_problems

People who have paid for Xbox 360 repair will be automatically distributed a reimbursement check in about 10 weeks from the present date.

Previously in September, 2006, Microsoft had waived the cost for repairs on all Xbox 360 consoles made before January 1, 2006, and refunded any fees already paid.

A full description of the updated warranty can be found here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemsetup/xbox360/resources/warranty.htm

Cricket as a sport had an excellent start globally which was introduced during the supremacy of England. Many Asian countries were plagued by the sport while India accepted and made the game second to its national sport. But this wasn\’t enough when cricket hit India during the British reign, the game was further spread to the Western country and America was one such nation to succumb to the sport. Cricket in USA was first introduced in the nation by the early Britishers from where it spread to other conquered territories by England. The sport had an excellent start in the American soil and many American men played the game either as a part of recreation or made it a professional sport of the country. Although, cricket as a sport was well acknowledged within the continent but it had a short time to spin its delivery. Initially, the sport was compared to its nemesis, \”baseball\” due to its usage of bat and ball. This created an utter confusion and many localities moved to the latter game. Moreover, cricket was mostly played within the white- collars, who sponsored the game and took the sport to new heights. And finally America faced the wrath of war and was pushed to battle \”American Civil War\”, and \”World War- I and II\”.

This lead the demolition of cricket within the nation and now the sport is just mentioned for namesake. Today, cricket as a sport has been rated next to Soccer, and unlike the latter game that is cherished and enjoyed among the European states, similarly cricket is highly acknowledged within the Asian countries. Today, the sport has gone beyond the boundaries, introducing many formats of the game such as ODIs, T20, and many more. Indian has accepted cricket and is played as a national sport while many

Lobby groups oppose plans for EU copyright extension

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

The European Commission currently has proposals on the table to extend performers’ copyright terms. Described by Professor Martin Kretschmer as the “Beatles Extension Act”, the proposed measure would extend copyright from 50 to 95 years after recording. A vast number of classical tracks are at stake; the copyright on recordings from the fifties and early sixties is nearing its expiration date, after which it would normally enter the public domain or become ‘public property’. E.U. Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services Charlie McCreevy is proposing this extension, and if the other relevant Directorate Generales (Information Society, Consumers, Culture, Trade, Competition, etc.) agree with the proposal, it will be sent to the European Parliament.

Wikinews contacted Erik Josefsson, European Affairs Coordinator for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (E.F.F.), who invited us to Brussels, the heart of E.U. policy making, to discuss this new proposal and its implications. Expecting an office interview, we arrived to discover that the event was a party and meetup conveniently coinciding with FOSDEM 2008 (the Free and Open source Software Developers’ European Meeting). The meetup was in a sprawling city centre apartment festooned with E.F.F. flags and looked to be a party that would go on into the early hours of the morning with copious food and drink on tap. As more people showed up for the event it turned out that it was a truly international crowd, with guests from all over Europe.

Eddan Katz, the new International Affairs Director of the E.F.F., had come over from the U.S. to connect to the European E.F.F. network, and he gladly took part in our interview. Eddan Katz explained that the Electronic Frontier Foundation is “A non-profit organisation working to protect civil liberties and freedoms online. The E.F.F. has fought for information privacy rights online, in relation to both the government and companies who, with insufficient transparency, collect, aggregate and make abuse of information about individuals.” Another major focus of their advocacy is intellectual property, said Eddan: “The E.F.F. represents what would be the public interest, those parts of society that don’t have a concentration of power, that the private interests do have in terms of lobbying.”

Becky Hogge, Executive Director of the U.K.’s Open Rights Group (O.R.G.), joined our discussion as well. “The goals of the Open Rights Group are very simple: we speak up whenever we see civil, consumer or human rights being affected by the poor implementation or the poor regulation of new technologies,” Becky summarised. “In that sense, people call us -I mean the E.F.F. has been around, in internet years, since the beginning of time- but the Open Rights Group is often called the British E.F.F.

Hall of Fame baseball player Kirby Puckett dies of stroke

Tuesday, March 7, 2006

Kirby Puckett, a former professional baseball player and Minnesota Twins legend, died Monday afternoon, March 6, in a Phoenix, Arizona, hospital, one day after suffering a stroke and undergoing emergency surgery for the resultant cerebral hemorrhage. He was 45 years old.

The Hall of Fame center fielder, whose .318 career batting average is surpassed only by Joe DiMaggio among right-handed hitters, was a ten-time All-Star in twelve seasons with the Minnesota Twins. “Puck” won six Gold Glove awards and five Silver Slugger awards for defensive and offensive excellence at his position, and led the Twins to World Series Championships in 1987 and 1991. He retired as the Twins’ all-time leader in hits, doubles, total bases, at-bats and runs, records that he still holds to this day. Unfortunately, his playing career was cut short in 1996, when he was diagnosed with glaucoma, which has left him blind in one eye. Even though his career was considerably shorter than those of most inductees, it was long enough for Baseball Hall of Fame eligibility. He was inducted in 2001, his first year of eligibility.

Puckett had gained weight in recent years, and was reportedly still suffering from a bitter divorce in 2002, and was still depressed about his career being cut short. His professional relationship with the Twins ended in 2002, and he went into seclusion thereafter. However, the Twins have constantly attempted to contact Puckett in hopes that he would return to help the team in some form. He also had his personal reputation sullied by an incident in 2003 where he was accused of groping a woman in a bathroom in a Minneapolis-area restaurant. He was cleared of all charges, but the emotional damage he incurred from the incident had increased his self-imposed seclusion from the baseball community.

Puckett suffered the stroke early Sunday morning at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was initially transported by ambulance to Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, then was airlifted to Scottsdale Osborne Hospital for emergency surgery in an attempt to stop a cerebral hemorrhage. After that, he was transferred St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center‘s Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix in hopes of further treatment. His condition declined, however. He received the last rites and passed away Monday afternoon.

Puckett is survived by his ex-wife Tonya, his children Catherine and Kirby Jr., and his fiancee, Jodi Olson. Funeral arrangements are pending.
