A good place to invest is not always the one that gives you highest return on investment in favorable times , not the one which promises to keep you growing with it without any framework to do the same, it is one that is robust to external factors and has enough resource planning and skillful thinking to maintain its backbone even in the deadliest of the storms and takes you up the ladder in better times without letting you fall from it in darker days. The recession of 2008-2009 saw most of the economies of the world falter like a tower of cards devastated by a gust of wind.

The economy of Dubai too did shake , but it had enough in it to fight back the recession and come up with alternate economies to help the city survive the much dreaded recession. There were reports that the recession hit the city so bad that the prices of real estate dropped by nearly 50 percent and there were hilarious yet scary instances of people evading their villa, disowning their Porshe\’s , Landrovers and fleeing Dubai as they were afraid to pay the loans they had taken to support their luxurious lifestyles.

But the government had backup plans, when real estate crashed they relied on tourism ,which actually was their savior in those years and let to maximum occupancy in hotels which in turn promoted growth of real estate. This cycle of dependency is very important for any economy to survive and thrive as, there is no sure formula of one particular sector doing good all the time, in those times the other sectors should manage to catalyse the economy. Great economies are results of wise decisions, one such extra ordinary decision was taken by the President of UAE to help the completion of Burj Dubai(then) ,the tallest skyscraper in the world. With this decision the tourism of Dubai has risen to unexpected limits as every traveler has the wish to have a glimpse of this outstanding modernist architectural masterpiece.

Now Dubai and rest of the world have mostly recovered from the shock and effects of the then hit recession, but where most of the economies are still sluggish in picking up, and are not putting any ambitious projects on their cards-includes the biggies US and Europe, surprisingly or rather not so surprisingly economic growth of this emirate has hit 4.4 % in the past year which is higher than its growth pre recession period in 2006. This clearly shows the robustness of the economy ,as even after such a debacle of finances over the globe it manages to overcome the shadow of frustration, fear, destruction, silent death and shown to the world that it is the Zenith of success ,happiness , security, Prosperity and growth which the economy of Dubai always strives for and where its economy is always meant to be.

All said and done, the ones who abandoned their Porshe and Landrovers and their suite houses for fear of bankruptcy, should have had more faith on the backbone of Dubai\’s economy.

At a nursing home in Providence, Rhode Island a cat is reported to be able to sense when elderly individuals are about to die.

The cat, known as ‘Oscar‘ is reported to have sensed the deaths of at least 25 elderly people. According to nursing home employees, Oscar has been living at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for two years and seems to sense the deaths at least two to four hours before they happen, and he is rarely wrong.

“It’s not that the cat is consistently there first. But the cat always does manage to make an appearance, and it always seems to be in the last two hours,” said professor of community health at the home, Dr. Joan Teno.

Oscar would go from room to room on a daily basis to watch and smell the patients, eventually curling up next to one that dies within a few hours, but since most of the patients he visits are too ill they do not notice his presence.

One veterinarian and expert on cats says that cats and dogs sense things that humans are not able to sense.

“It’s such a cat thing to do. Those things are hard to study. I think probably dogs and cats can sense things we can’t,” said University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, chief of veterinarian medicine at the college, Thomas Graves who also added that he does not believe it has anything to do with being a ‘psychic cat’ saying “there’s probably a biochemical explanation.”

With online gaming in persistent worlds becoming more prevalent, a US congressional committee has begun to look into the tax implications of these booming online economies. Games such as World of Warcraft and Second Life have large player driven economic systems in which – either following the rules or against them – real world currencies are exchanged for in-game currencies. With the GDP of some of these economies rivaling that of some small countries, the US government is wondering if it is missing out on a potential source of tax revenue: or as some gamers might put it, the IRS is asking “You buy gold?”.

In cases where exchange of a real world currency for in-game currency is permitted by the rules of the game, some of these online games such as Second Life require that players report any income generated by these means to his or her government. In most on-line games however, a black market exists where players buy and sell in-game currencies in direct violation of the game’s rules; situations involving black markets are notoriously hard to tax.

Compounding the issue of currency exchange is the existence of in-game assets. In the real world if someone wins a luxury vehicle, he or she is expected to pay a capital gains tax on his or her winnings. If a 40 person “raid” in World of Warcraft gets a rare “drop,” worth up to thousands of dollars if sold illegally, should they be required to pay a capital gains tax?

Even if the issue of capital gains is ignored, there is still the matter of sales tax. In many of these games, non-player characters and players alike sell items to one another. If sales tax is to be applied, at what rate should it be charged and to what State does it go? Questions such as these have just recently been answered in much less hazy situations such as online versions of brick and mortar establishments.

Dan Miller, senior economist for the Joint Economic Committee had this to say on the issue, “I found that talking about this issue with some of the other economists on the committee, they are not really familiar with what a virtual economy is. The idea of Second Life or World of Warcraft or some of these other synthetic universes, they have trouble wrapping their head around it. So there’s an educational hurdle to overcome here.”

The preliminary findings of the committee state that virtual economies deserve clarification of existing tax laws, not new taxes.

US House of Representatives passes universal health care bill

The United States House of Representatives has passed The Affordable Health Care for America Act or HR 3962, a bill which would ensure that 95–96% of US citizens receive affordable health care.

HR 3962 was passed with 220 yeas and 215 nays. Democrats in the house needed at least 218 votes to pass the bill. 39 Democrats voted against the bill, which contained the Stupak amendment. This amendment curtailed women’s abortion rights. One Republican, Representative Joseph Cao of Louisiana, voted for the bill.

The US Senate has drafted their own health care bill, S. 1679. It is not yet known when the Senate will vote on their version of the bill, but in the end both versions must be merged into one with both the House and Senate voting again.

The health care program associated with HR 3962 is estimated to cost over US$1 trillion over ten years, according to the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who states that it will result in “[…] not one dime added to the deficit.”

US President Barack Obama says that he is “confident” that the Senate will be able to come to an agreement and pass a completed bill. Obama added that he hopes to sign a “comprehensive health insurance reform into law by the end of the year.”

With five active cases of the Delta variant of COVID-19, South Australia begun a one-week lockdown on Monday. Announcing the lockdown, state Premier Steven Marshall declared “we have no alternative but to impose some fairly heavy and immediate restrictions”.

The first case out of South Australia’s active cases was presented to Modbury Hospital on Sunday night, having returned from Argentina earlier this month. The fifth, which Premier Marshall noted as “far more worrying”, visited The Greek on Halifax restaurant at the same time as someone who was later confirmed to be carrying the virus. Chief Public Health Officer for the state Nicola Spurrier said “if anyone has been at The Greek on Halifax they need to get into quarantine and get tested”.

In accordance with new regulations, there are only five reasons for South Australians to leave home: essential work, shopping for essential goods such as food, exercise, but only with people from the same household and within 2.5 kilometers (2 mi) of home, medical reasons (which includes testing and vaccination against the coronavirus, but excludes elective and cosmetic surgery), and caregiving.

Schools have closed for all but children of essential workers, with online learning having begun on Thursday. Face masks are also be mandated for those who leave home. ABC News reported that “support for businesses is expected to be announced…”, with all non-essential retail required to close under the new regulations.

SBI Life-Smart Elite is a unit-linked life insurance plan crafted exclusively for high net worth individuals. The plan is no different from other Ulips offered by SBI Life except that it has a high premium bracket starting from Rs 1,50,000. It offers two protection options. Under the Gold option, the diagram provides a choice of higher of sum assured or fund value on unfortunate events.

Under the Platinum choice, the nominee of the policyholder would receive both. The scheme offers six alternative investment options (funds) with varying equity and debt exposure for the policyholder.

COST STRUCTURE: The large ticket size has helped keep the cost of this scheme low. The insurance company charges 15% premium allocation charges for a 5-year period. This is much lower than the 20-25% charged by some other insurers.

Additional premium paid towards investment purposes only (top-ups) attract a 2% allocation charge. The policy administration charge is fixed at Rs 600 per annum for a single premium policyholder and Rs 720 pa for the rest. This helps in keeping the cost organization low since the administration charge is defined in absolute terms and is not linked to the annual premium. It needs to be noted that the scheme’s mortality charges are same as that of the LIC mortality table, unlike other insurance companies, which have higher charges.

BENEFITS: SBI Life-Smart Elite is a flexible plan with various premium payment modes. The system allows the policyholder to increase or reduce the sum assured based on the needs. However, this flexibility is only allowed three times in the entire policy tenure. An increase in the sum assured is subject to underwriting and is not available at 50 years and above. The plan offers a settlement option, under which a policyholder can take away the fund value at maturity in five instalments.

PERFORMANCE: SBI Life-Smart Elite offers a basket of six investment options of which three funds are more than five years old. These include Balanced Fund, Bond Fund and Money Market Fund, while the rest three are recently launched and are just about a year old.

While most of the old funds have outperformed the benchmark with good margins, the new funds are yet to show their sheen.Equity Elite fund is nowhere close to the regular equity fund of SBI Life which is the best performing fund in the category with more than 23% annualised returns. P/E Managed and Index funds, which are equity-oriented funds, have also not put up an encouraging show.

PORTFOLIO REVIEW: SBI Life Insurance primarily has a large-cap defined equity portfolio with just about 4-5% mid-cap stock holding. Top holdings of the portfolio include Infosys, Reliance Industries , ICICI Bank and L&T. Similar to most other funds, SBI Life has a higher exposure to the financial services and oil and gas sectors. The healthcare sector, a more defensive one, forms a small part of the portfolio due to a complex business model, according to the fund manager . The portfolios have very significant exposure in metal stocks, which are currently underperforming.

DEATH / MATURITY BENEFIT: On maturity, the policyholder gets the amount accumulated in the fund. In the case of demise, the nominee of the policyholder receives higher of the sum assured or the fund value or both, subject to a minimum of 105% of the basic total premium paid towards the policy over the period.

For instance, say a 35-year healthy male invests Rs 2,00,000 per annum in the equity fund for 10 years. Assuming that the sum assured is 20 times the annual premium, the total sum assured receivable, in case of any eventuality, would be Rs 40 lakh. By the end of 20 years, assuming the rate of return of 6% and 10%, the fund value shall be Rs 36,65,524 and Rs 67,76,640 respectively.

OUR VIEW: Smart Elite is one of the most competent products in terms of its cost structure. It provides flexibility to investors.

Among its six funds, Balanced and Bond funds have shown a remarkable performance. But high net worth individuals generally have a high risk appetite. Since the returns from the equity-oriented funds in Smart Elite are not as good, prospective investors will be better-off by investing in other products of SBI Life.

Bomb blast kills seven in northwest Pakistan

Officials in Pakistan have said that a bomb blast killed seven Pakistani soldiers and wounded eleven others on Saturday in the northwestern part of the country. The incident took place in the Khyber region, which is the main route for moving supplies to international forces fighting in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The explosion struck a vehicle that was transporting paramilitary troops on a patrol near the region’s main town of Landikotal, according to a spokesman for the Frontier Corps. “The vehicle was completely destroyed and seven of our soldiers were killed,” the spokesman said.

Pakistani armed forces started an operation against militants in the Khyber region in September, saying that the rebels had started to expand their activities. The mountainous area along the Afghanistan border is said to be haven for both al-Qaeda and Taliban insurgents.

The violence comes a day after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ended her visit to the country.

Eleven of the 25 workers at the Vestas factory in Newport, Isle of Wight, England who have been carrying out a sit-in since Monday July 20 have been sacked with immediate effect.

According to one of the protesters known as “Mike”, the occupiers were given their dismissal notices concealed under slices of their evening meal of pizza. The company said that the protesters have had ample opportunity to air their point of view, and had no choice but to sack eleven of the twenty five workers that they had positively identified; and that given that the fact that the action constituted a “fundamental breach” of trust, that the eleven would not be entitled to redundancy packages. A press release from the company said that Vestas “saw no other choice than to dismiss the 11 employees, who the company has positively identified as the employees currently participating in the occupation of the factory.”

The protesters remained upbeat, vowing to continue their occupation and have called upon the UK government to save the 625 jobs and to nationalise the Danish owned factory. Occupier Ian Terry told the BBC that if the occupiers are forced out, they plan to leave the building “peacefully”.

Vestas management were dealt a setback today in ending the occupation as Newport County Court ruled that the papers accusing the occupiers of aggravate trespass and requiring they surrender the office they occupy by July 29 were improperly served. The case has been adjourned until Tuesday August 4. In court, Judge Graham White said he was “distinctly uncomfortable” with what he perceived as Vestas’ effort to “get around the rules” in retaking the factory from the occupiers.

Legal representation for the Vestas workers had been offered by Bob Crow, secretary of the RMT trade union. Crow has pledged the “full solidarity” of the RMT and seven other unions with the workers occupying the plant.

Vestas management has also been providing the occupiers with hot meals in an apparent response to Crow’s announcement, made on July 24, that the RMT was planning on airlifting food into the factory by helicopter. Crow is meeting today with Ed Miliband, the Environment Minister.

Earlier in the week, Miliband pledged £6 million in funding to an expansion of Vestas’ Isle of Wight research and development centre, which currently employs 110 workers and could, said the Minister, be expanded to employ 40 more.

Rallies continued throughout the week in support of the Vestas occupiers. Since the occupation began, the Vestas workers have received declarations of support and solidarity from a wide swathe of the British left, including but not limited to: political parties Green Party, Respect, the Socialist Party, the Socialist Workers Party, the Alliance for Workers Liberty, and the Communist Party of Britain; the TUCG group, which brings together the BFAWU, FBU, NAPO, NUJ, PCS, POA, RMT, and URTU; and environmental groups Greenpeace, the Campaign against Climate Change, Climate Camp, and Workers’ Climate Action, who claims credit for initiating the campaign to occupy the factory. Attendees of the Big Green Gathering, a large annual environmentalist rally which was due to take place starting today but was suddenly canceled on Sunday, are being encouraged to go to the Isle of Wight and take part in support rallies for Vestas instead.

Speaking to Wikinews about the “red–green” coalition supporting the occupation, a spokesman for the Alliance for Workers’ Liberty said: “We think this struggle is important on at least three grounds — it is central to the struggle for jobs, it is central to the struggle for the environment, and it is central to the struggle for rebuilding the labour movement.”

Photographs shared with Wikinews by the occupiers show the occupiers, mostly young men, talking, carrying out everyday tasks, and keeping in touch with the outside world via mobile phones. The use of mobile telephones in the Vestas occupation has given the press remarkable access to the occupiers and provided an effective platform for relaying their demands and feelings to the media. In contrast, Vestas’s designated media contact for the United Kingdom is on vacation. Attempts to reach Vestas Newport factory manager Patrick Weir, whom a Vestas representative at the company’s Danish headquarters stated was handling press inquiries regarding the occupation, received no reply.

Vestas plans to close the factory on July 31, citing the difficulties of obtaining planning permission for wind farms in the United Kingdom. All blades manufactured at Vestas’ Newport plant are sent to the United States. 1900 employees of the company in Northern Europe face job losses, 625 of them in Vestas’s plants in the south of England.
