Hundreds feared dead after Indian ferry boat capsizes

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

A double-decker ferry capsized late Monday in the Brahmaputra River near Guwahati, India. The ferry was over capacity when a storm caused it to overturn and break in half. The ferry passengers were mostly women and children. Officials estimate there are at least 200 casualties. Inclement weather hindered rescue attempts and as of Tuesday, 103 bodies have been recovered. No life jackets or lifeboats were aboard the ferry at the time of the event.

According to officials, many of the bodies may have floated 25 miles down river to Bangladesh, due to strong currents. The river is a vital source of irrigation and transportation to the people along its coast. It is approximately 1,800 miles long, making rescue efforts difficult to pursue quickly. Rescuers are working around the clock in efforts to locate any remaining survivors.

About 150 passengers swam to a nearby shore. The remaining passengers are missing and are feared dead. Reports indicate this is one of the worst ferry accidents ever recorded in India. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh issued a statement expressing his remorse over the death of the passengers and announcing that he would compensate the next of kin of all casualties Rs 200,000, or about $4,000 US dollars.

Civilians killed in U.S. raid near Balad

Friday, March 17, 2006

A U.S. raid near Balad on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of between nine and 13 civilians. An Associated Press photographer recorded pictures of the bodies of two men, five children, and four covered corpses reported to be women. The victims had bits of rubble tangled in their hair and were covered in dust. Police Capt. Hakim Azzawi said in an interview with the Washington Post that 13 in total were dead, two men, five children, and six women. The U.S. military confirmed the attack but said only four people died — two women, a man and a child.

Family of the victims said the 11 dead people were wrapped in blankets and driven in three pickup trucks to the Tikrit General Hospital.

The US military said that the raid resulted in a “foreign fighter facilitator” being taken into coalition custody for questioning.

Police Capt. Laith Mohammed stated that the attack 50 miles north of Baghdad involved U.S. warplanes and armored vehicles, which flattened a house in the village of Isahaqi.

Ahmed, the brother of the dead man, told the Associated Press, “The dead family was not part of the resistance. They were women and children. The Americans have promised us a better life, but we get only death.”

Candidates make campaign stop at trade fairs ahead of 2008 Taiwan Presidential Election

Friday, November 9, 2007

Thursday, November 8, two trade shows, named MEDIPHAR Taipei at the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) and Taipei Audio Video Fair at the TWTC and The Grand Hotel, opened in Taipei, Taiwan. Some politicians and government officials chose these events as an opportunity to promote their parties and campaign-coalitions ahead of the 2008 Taiwan Presidential Elections.

From the incumbent Pan-Green Coalition, President of the Republic of China Chen Shui-bian, Premier of Republic of China Chang Chun-hsiung, and spokesman for the Executive Yuan Jung-tai Cho visited the two shows successively and were innundated by Taiwanese media. President Chen avoided answering questions on the hot topic of commodities prices, addressing only those about the medical industry development, overseen by Sheng-mao Hou, Minister of Health.

From the Pan-Blue Coalition, 2008 vice-presidential candidate, and former Premier, Vincent Siew participated the opening of the Taipei Audio Video Fair at The Grand Hotel. He criticized on the economy policy and remarked: “The ruling party [DPP] doesn’t have a good track record, and some industries weren’t be supported in timely manner so that they lost some opportunities. I sincerely hope the government can appropriately assist the audio and video industries in marketing good brands and products to the world.”

Also, current Democratic Progressive Party legislator Wang Shih-chien was invited to give a violin performance and sing a Taiwanese song. The events at the Taipei World Trade Center proved to be quite a platform for the candidates running in the 2008 Taiwan Presidential Elections.

Synthetic Biology Market: Key Players Driving Innovation With Strategic M&Amp;As

Synthetic Biology Market: Key Players Driving Innovation With Strategic M&Amp;As

The global synthetic biology market is marked by intensive R&D. Governments, universities, research institutions, and private firms are all busy coming up with the most cutting-edge technology in the synthetic biology market. The global synthetic biology market will expand at a remarkable CAGR of 32.60% during the forecast period from 2013 to 2019, says Transparency Market Research (TMR). One of the key drivers of the global synthetic biology market is the increasing participation in synthetic biology research.

The global synthetic biology market is at its early development stage and will continue to witness strong growth due to widespread R&D efforts. Some of the application areas of synthetic biology are agriculture, chemicals, healthcare, energy and environment, and biosecurity. Demand for synthetic biology technologies is growing in all these application areas, which will prompt the growth of the overall synthetic biology market. To drive innovation and thrive in the market, players in the global synthetic biology market are focusing on strategic mergers and acquisitions (M&As). Let us look at the key M&As that have taken place in the global synthetic biology market.

Brochure Download:

Reverse Merger of Evolva and Arpida

Evolva, a Swiss company, is using a genetically modified yeast to create things that are typically not found in nature. In December 2009, the Swiss firm started trading via a reverse merger with a firm called Arpida. Arpida, a publicly traded company, lost nearly all of its value after its lead drug candidate failed to receive regulatory approval. This merger between Evolva and Arpida will create a new publicly listed company having a technology platform that deploys synthetic biology to create small molecule drugs.

Integrated DNA Technologies to Acquire AITbiotech

Recently, Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT), a provider of synthetic nucleic acids for molecular biology applications, will be acquiring the oligonucleotide synthesis business from AITbiotech. IDT’s primary business involves the production of synthetic biology products, synthetic nucleic acids, and functional genomics. AITbiotech is based in Singapore and offers a complete suite of genomics services to healthcare, research, and the biomedical industry in Asia. This acquisition is projected to help IDT expand its consumer base in Asia and make it possible for these consumers to access the firm’s broad range of genomic products.

Caribou and CRISPR Aiming Acquisitions

Top firms such as BASF, DuPont, Bayer CropScience, Syngenta, and Dow Chemical Company, have invested millions of dollars to fuel their R&D for commercialization of GM crops. Furthermore, these companies are expected to invest more in the foreseeable future to build new gene editing tools and provide enhanced non-GMO crops. To make this possible, many of these companies are expected to acquire/merge/partner with notable synthetic biology firms. Two of the companies that are at the forefront for acquisition in the global synthetic biology market are Caribou and Cibus. These companies are producing herbicide-resistant crops along with other innovations.

Danish PM pushes for new referendum on euro

Friday, November 7, 2008

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Prime Minister of Denmark, said on Tuesday that he will seek broad parliamentary support for a national referendum on joining the euro, the common currency of the Eurozone.

“I’m convinced that we need broad support in parliament to hold a referendum, because it’s about the Danish currency and about stability and safety,” he said, speaking at his weekly press conference. “Recent events have shown the necessity to give the population the opportunity to vote on Denmark joining the euro.”

Berlingske Tidende is reporting that Rasmussen is meeting with political leaders to negotiate support for the referendum.

In 1992, Danish voters rejected the Maastrict Treaty in a referendum. It was only able to pass the following year after the Edinburgh Agreement granted Denmark an opt-out of the third stage of the Economic and Monetary Union of the European Union (EMU).

In 2000, Denmark again rejected the common currency in a euro referendum. The current currency of the Scandinavian country is the Danish krone. As part of stage two of the EMU, the exchange rate of the krone is allowed to fluctuate within a ±2.25% range to the euro.

In order to maintain this peg Danmarks Nationalbank, the central bank, adjusts interest rates and performs foreign exchange operations by buying and selling currency. To do this, Danmarks Nationalbank has had to raise rates twice, even as other central banks, including the European Central Bank (ECB), were lowering rates to deal with the current economic crisis.

As a result, interest rates in Denmark are now 175 basis points higher than the ECB’s rates. As recently as May, the difference was only 25 basis points.

Rasmussen heads the Venstre party which leads a minority coalition government. The main opposition party, the Social Democrats, also support adopting the euro as the nation’s currency.

While there has long been support among the politicians, the euro has failed when it has been put before the voters. However, recent opinion polls have shown a growing support for the euro among Danes. The most recent of these have seen those in favor just topping the 50% level needed to pass a referendum.

Rasmussen has said he wants a referendum put before voters before 2011. His government had originally planned to hold a referendum this past September to abolish the EMU opt-outs, but that was scrapped when Ireland voted down the Treaty of Lisbon.

On October 30, while in Stockholm, Sweden, Rasmussen said: “The euro ensures political and economical stability in Europe and the current financial turmoil makes it evident that Denmark has to join the Euro.”

Analysts consulted by Berlingske Tidende have said that an endorsement from the Socialist People’s Party (SF) could prove to be the tide-turner.

“If there was a vote, then I would vote Yes. But I am of the opinion that it is stupid to hold a vote unless we first have a real debate. We haven’t had a debate in eight years and all arguments need to be tested,” said Margrete Auken of SF.

Grandfather and grandson die after dinghy capsizes off North Wales coast

Sunday, July 3, 2005

A grandfather and his grandson have died off the coast of North Wales, UK, after their sailing dinghy was overwhelmed and capsized in rough seas. They were with a party of four who had been angling from a 4.6 m boat.

At 4pm local time on Saturday the Holyhead Coastguard received an emergency call from the Star Reader saying they had found a capsized dinghy adrift three and a half miles north of Puffin Island, off the east coast of the Isle of Anglesey.

A third vessel, the Sara Jane, also attended the scene to allow a first aider on board to render assistance.

A RAF search and rescue helicopter was scrambled and the Beaumaris lifeboat launched to effect a rescue effort. Two people were found clinging to the boat but two more had been washed away. A rapid search recovered both of them.

The rescue helicopter lowered its winchman onto the dinghy to begin CPR on the nine year old boy before he was winched onboard. He was flown to nearby Bangor Hospital, but later died.

The Beaumaris lifeboat raced the grandfather – also suffering serious hypothermia – ashore to a waiting ambulance, but he too died shortly afterwards. The lifeboat also carried an uninjured member of the party ashore, while the helicopter returned to rescue a second young boy.

The father and a twelve year old boy survived. All had been wearing life jackets, but the sea was running at 1.5 m waves in a 45 km/h wind at the time.

It is believed the two dead had been in the water for at least three hours before they were recovered, and died from the effects of hypothermia.

Ayurveda, the science of life, is an ancient Indian science of life and medicine. Now days, it has been enjoying a major resurgence in both its native land and throughout the world. While allopathic medicine tends to focus on the management of disease, it provides us with the knowledge of how it happened, to identify and eliminate the root cause. It seeks at making a happy, healthy and peaceful society. The two most important aims of Ayurveda are:

1. To maintain the health of healthy people.

2. To cure the diseases of sick people.

Five things that Ayurveda an entire discipline functions on are

1. You’re not like the rest

According to Ayurveda, each one of us are unique, very unique. Understanding this main principle, it offers us an explanation as to why one person responds differently to a treatment or diet than another and why persons with the same disease might yet require different treatments and medications.

2. You are forever changing

You change with every passing moment. And these changes that happen inside of you are very much driven by outside happenings such as changing seasons or changing diets. Knowing your daily cycles and habits what may give you an insight on changes you are experiencing and why.

3. We are same at elemental level

five elements for living are: fire, air, water, earth, and air. And not only our body but also our minds functions on the combinations of these elements. Our elemental signature also gives us clues to our mental and physical tendencies (e.g., weight gain, hostility, forgetfulness), allowing us to recognize and balance them!

4. Everything around you is either medicine or poison

According to this science, everything we eat, see, wear, say, touch, hear, think or even sense with has the potential to either support or sabotage our health and wellness. Knowing our poison and our medicine empowers us to make healthier, better-informed choices for prevention and treatment of issues.

5. Your digestion runs you

In the Ayurvedic model everything we experience is a form of “food” for the mind, body or soul, including all the sights, sounds, emotions, ideas and sensations that we encounter every day. The mind and body must work together to distinguish and assimilate the good stuff and let go of what doesn’t really serve us.

The shodhana therapy includes procedures that eradicate the vitiated humors from the body. eg.Vamana (Emesis), Virechana (Purgation), Vasti (Enema), Nasya (Nasal errhines). The technique of shaman consists of pacifying the doshas or bring them back to normalcy e.g. Deepana (Carminative), Pachana (Digestive), Upavasa (Fasting) etc.Two of the eight branches of classical Ayurveda deal with surgery (Salya-cikitsa and Salakya-tantra), but contemporary Ayurveda tends to emphasize attaining vitality by building a healthy metabolic system and maintaining good digestion and excretion. Ayurveda also focuses on exercise, yoga, and meditation. Ayurveda follows the concept of Dinacharya, which says that natural cycles (waking, sleeping, working, meditation etc.) as well as hygiene habits such as regular bathing, cleaning of teeth, skin care, and eye washing are important for health.

Ayurveda is known today as the only complete medical system still in existence that follows All in Divine Order, and that nature provides us with everything we need for health and balance, and Ayurveda is the only health science that teaches you how to make choices with awareness according to your own unique constitution. The world will be a better place to live in when we will truly connect with nature.

Southern Australian munitions factory explodes

Wednesday, May 10, 2006

An Australian munitions factory exploded in South Australia. Two people were killed, another two were injured and one is still missing.

The factory produced explosives for quarrying, civil engineering and the military.

The explosion leveled everything within 100 metres and could be heard from 70km away.

Emergency services have been held back to a one kilometre radius of the factory until an explosives expert from Adelaide could come.

“It’s very dangerous, so we’re holding back,” police inspector Phil Warwick said, “It’s an explosives factory. All right it’s exploded, but that doesn’t mean all the explosives have gone. There’s still smoke coming from the area, which means there must be fire or heat. Put them (remaining explosives and fire) together and we could have another (explosion).”
