Listening Skills Development: How Listening Skills Can Make You Successful In Life

Listening Skills Development: How Listening Skills Can Make You Successful In Life

Listening Skills Development: How Listening Skills Can Make You Successful In Life by Jeremy GislasonPeople are always moved by good speakers. Orators, politicians, members of the debate team After all, they command a certain air of respect and the people love listening to what they have to say. However, they may also tend to overlook the importance of improving listening skills. With listening skills development, you can build better relationships and enhance your way of life. Have you ever heard of the expression, Hes all talk? Well, its not something youd like other people to say about you, thats for sure! So maybe sometimes, its better to cease talking for a while and start putting in more effort to just listen.Listening is often depicted as a passive form of action. However, it is no less powerful. People who know how, and when, to listen properly can go a long way. Id even go so far as to say that listening skills development can lead to a wealthier and more successful life!So how did listening get so powerful?Well, listening leads to having a lot of useful information. Wherever you go, people talk. They talk about the latest news or the latest gadget thats out on the market right now. All these details might not make a lot of sense at first, but you could find them useful one way or another. In the workplace, listening is a desired skill. How many assistants have been fired because they didnt know how to listen? How many employees have screwed a project up because they were blabbing more and more about their own thoughts than listening to the thoughts of their superiors?Remember that listening is different from just hearing. When you listen, you also try to understand and analyze the words that are coming out of the speakers mouth. For example, your company sends you off into a conference. Listening properly means absorbing what is being said, and connecting that with what is happening in your own company. Its more interactive than most people realize. In personal relationships, listening also goes a long way. How many fights have you had wherein your partner claims that you dont know how to listen? Sometimes, you need to talk less and listen more. The more you talk, the more aggravated both parties can become. Listening, on the other hands, helps you process your emotions and stops you from doing or saying something you might regret later on. So how can you become a better listener? Well, you start with being aware of yourself. If you know that you talk too much, youll have a much easier time holding your tongue. In conversations, you dont always have to say something. In meetings, you dont always have to speak too much of your mind. It might be a little challenging for someone whos used to doing all the talking, but try it one step at a time. Or at least, try it out for the shock value. Imagine just how surprised people will be when you choose to listen to them this time around. Besides, by talking less, you might be surprised at how brilliant other peoples ideas are. Another way to develop your listening skills is by giving yourself a self-exam. At a meeting, try your best to listen to the speaker and then summarize what he or she has said afterwards. Doing this will also help you improve your memory. Indeed, listening is an important skill to have in life. However, you must also be careful not to end up listening to the wrong things. Gossip, for example, is one of them. Of course, sometimes you just cant help but listen to what other people say about person x or person y; but dont let unverified information get to your head. Keep that piece of information stowed somewhere where you wont accidentally let it out. Despite being a basic human skill, youd be surprised at how many people fail to listen to others properly. This could have something to do with their actual attitude or about their life in general. Dont be part of that group of people who dont care about what others think. Be the person who listens. Be the person who can make a difference in the workplace.Jeremy Gislason, owner of SureFireWealth Inc, the publisher of the self improvement series at mindmaptoriches.com certainly has the right mindset to be teaching others. A great Self Help Book “Mindmap to Riches” series can change the course of one’s life.Article Source: eArticlesOnline.com

Students raise record amounts of money during Christmas fundraiser at Benet Academy, Illinois

Saturday, December 19, 2009

Students at Benet Academy in Lisle, Illinois, United States raised record amounts of money this year during their Christmas Drive fundraiser.

The annual two-week event is aimed at promoting the Christmas spirit in helping the poor and needy. Coordination of the fundraiser is a joint effort by the faculty and three students organizations—Student Government, National Honor Society (NHS), and Outreach. Donations from previous years have allowed Outreach to provide food and Christmas gifts to dozens of families during the holiday season. NHS in the past has provided blankets, winter gear, and toys to local families as well.

A semi-formal dance held on Dec. 5 kicked off the Christmas Drive this year. Two weeks of in-school fundraising efforts ensued, including several no-uniform days and Benet’s traditional Penny Wars. In that four-day activity, the four grade levels competed against each other to see who can collect the most pennies. Nickels, dimes, and quarters were allowed but had negative value in the class total. The seniors won this contest, allowing them to have a no-uniform day on Dec. 11. Other activities such as bake sales and a beard-growing contest raised money as well.

During an all-school assembly on Friday, the last day of the drive, Student Government President Kyle Marinko announced that preliminary calculations put the amount of donations at US$53,392.82, a record for the school. Last year’s drive collected approximately US$42,000. A final total has not been officially announced, since Student Government officials continue to count additional donations that have been received.

Formula One set to see standardised engines

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Formula One looks set to enter an era of standardised engines. The FIA is meeting with teams in Monte Carlo and is expected to approve the use by some teams of a standardised power unit provided by Cosworth, an automotive engineering company, from 2010 onwards. The move to a standard engine, which is common in lower tiers of open wheeled racing such as GP2, was pushed for by FIA President Max Mosley earlier this year as he aims to reduce team costs. This would not see the exclusion of manufacturer made engines, as at this time participation in the system would be voluntary and teams would be free to build licensed Cosworth engines or their own powerplants but on a performance par with the Cosworth unit. Mosley has stated that stabilising Formula One means that the FIA “…must stabilize the system with a base engine which anyone can have and which is inexpensive, as well as a standard gearbox” and has warned of future budget problems, saying that “Honda pulled out because of falling car sales and there is no guarantee that these falling sales, which affect all manufacturers, will not drop further”.

Ahead of the meeting of the FIA there have been rumours in the Italian press that Formula One team Renault had broken with the Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA), rumours which Renault has strongly denied. FOTA was established earlier this year by the teams to negotiate with the FIA over cost cutting measures and other changes, changes it hopes will stop the introduction of compulsory standardisation of engines and other parts on F1 cars. The FOTA’s position was hard hit last week by the announcement by Honda that they were leaving F1 due to the economic crisis, a move which has caused many teams to re-assert their commitment to a future in Formula One. David Richards, whose Prodrive entry to Formula One was called off last season due to costs, highlighted what he sees as the need for fundamental changes, saying that Honda’s exit was ‘a salutary lesson for the whole of F1 that things are going to have to change, and everything is going to have to come back a little bit if the whole sport is to prosper in the future’.

Five teams have reportedly expressed an interest in the Cosworth engines from the 2010 season, the five being all four independent teams (Williams, Force India, Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso) joined by manufacturer Renault. If only four teams sign up to the idea, the FIA has announced it will go ahead. Renault have been highly vocal in criticising the failure of the engine development freeze that has existed in Formula One and have, after a couple of seasons of struggling, been under pressure from their parent company to justify the continued expenditure in Formula One. Cosworth have previously been prolific engine suppliers in Formula One, their last stint was supplying engines to Williams in 2006.

The talks come as many of the Formula One teams are in Jerez for part of their winter testing regime, with potential Toro Rosso driver Sebastian Buemi topping the time sheets for the first two days.

Neanderthals ‘knew what they were doing’: Archæologist Dr Naomi Martisius discusses her findings about Neanderthals’ behaviour with Wikinews

Sunday, June 28, 2020

Last month, a study conducted by archæologist Dr. Naomi Martisius and other researchers concluded Neanderthals living in Europe tens of thousands of years ago were more sophisticated than previously thought. The now-extinct species used to carefully select bones from a particular animal species to manufacture their bone tools, the research showed. The research was published on May 8 in Nature’s Scientific Reports journal.

Dr Martisius and her team used five bone tools discovered from Neanderthals’ sites in southwest France for this research. Four of these bone tools were found in a site called Abri Peyrony and the other one was from Pech-de-l’Azé I. These tools were just a few centimetres in size and were about 50 thousand years old, Dr Martisius told Wikinews. Microscopy analysis of these bone tools called lissoirs (smoothers) suggested Neanderthals used these tools for working animal skin to leathers.

The study stated the fauna of the sites were primarily medium-sized ungulates such as reindeer, in one layer nearly 90%. Despite the overabundance of medium-sized ungulates, Neanderthals used ribs of large bovids for making lissoirs. Dr Martisius told Wikinews this was likely due to the physical characteristics of the bovid ribs, which were “thicker” and “stronger” as compared to the “thin and flimsy ribs” of reindeers. In order to check the origins of the bone tools, the researchers used a technology called non-destructive Zooarchæology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS).

Instead of damaging the bone artefacts in order to discover its origins, the researchers collected collagen from the plastic containers in which these artefacts were kept. Collagen is a type of protein. These bone artefacts were kept in plastic containers: some were kept for about five years, some for just a few months. During this time, the collagen proteins from bone tools were stuck to the walls of its plastic containers. The collagen samples collected from the walls of the containers are broken into smaller molecules called peptides by using a chemical enzyme called trypsin.

After the trypsin has broken collagen fibres into peptides, it is analysed using a technology called Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer (ToF MS). The assisting matrix is a coloured compound. The acidic peptide is combined with the matrix, vapourised, and peptides are released. Some of them are positively-charged particles which travel across a vacuum tube in an electric field. Depending on the weight of the peptides, these molecules reach the end of the vacuum tube at different instances of time, forming a spectrum. These graphs are like unique fingerprints of a species: they are different for different species of animals. Looking at the database of such graphs, taxonomic identifications of the collagen proteins came be made.

All four bone tools from Abri Peyrony gave positive results and showed that the bones were made from large bovids, even though reindeer were more abundant during that time. One of the advantages of using bovid ribs over reindeer’s thin ribs was the bovid ribs would be more resistant to breaking during flexion, Dr Martisius said.

Dr Martisius said such non-destructive ZooMS analysis was previously conducted, but for tools no older than a few centuries. She said such an analysis had never been previously conducted for artefacts so ancient.

Wikinews caught up with Dr Martisius to discuss this research in-depth.

Car bombing kills Yemen government official; ISIS claims responsibility

Monday, December 7, 2015

Yesterday, at least seven people including Aden, Yemen governor Jaafar Mohammed Saad died in a car bomb attack on their convoy in the city of Aden, according to local officials. An online claim of responsibility on behalf of militant group ISIS called Saad a “tyrant”.

An online post purportedly from the group claimed they detonated the bomb as Saad’s convoy passed where the car was parked. The post shared photos purporting to show Saad’s vehicle passing the parked car, and the following explosion.

People as much as 10km away reported hearing the explosion, and medics said it left victims’ bodies unrecognizable. Photos supposedly of the attack showed a burning, wrecked car. Aden’s Jumhoriya Hospital treated the victims.

The online statement threatened to “chop off” the “rotten heads” of Yemen’s “infidels”, and said more attacks are coming.

Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who follow Shia Islam, have taken over Yemen’s capital of Sanaa. Until just recently, President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi’s government operated for several months in Saudi Arabia, which has led a coalition involving air strikes against the rebels.

Yemeni fatalities in ISIS-claimed bombings this year number reportedly around 159. Yemeni fatalities since March, when Saudi Arabia’s pro-Hadi airstrikes began, number at least 5,700 according to the United Nations.

Doubts on yesterday’s Italian Lotto and Superenalotto drawing

Thursday, May 5, 2005

The live television broadcast of the Italian Lotto draw, which was used to award the record-breaking 72.090.405,19 Superenalotto prize Tuesday, is reported to have had problems in the drawing procedure.

Only the numbered ball extraction of the “Ruota di Roma” (Wheel of Rome) was shown in the live television broadcast.

Instead of the traditional ball extraction made by a child, a new method based on an automatic machine was used for the “Wheel of Rome” and for the new “National Wheel”. The other “Wheels” were drawn with the traditional system but were not broadcast on public television.

The operation with the new machine worked for the new “National Wheel” but when the operation started for the “Wheel of Rome”, something went wrong. Not all the balls were taken into the box by the compressed air jet. A person tried to solve the problem, but a ball had fallen on the floor. Television images did not make it clear what really happened. Some parts of the procedure may not have been shown on television. The organization stated that the fallen ball was reinserted into the box, but this was not shown on television.

For these reasons, doubts have arisen about the regularity of the draw. Mr. Corbelli, the president of Movimento Diritti Civili, an association for civil rights, has stated that he wants an investigation to be made by the justice system to clarify what really happened and to check if the drawing was regular.

Anti Inflammatory Herbs Like Curamin Can Help Fight Inflammation Pain

Anti Inflammatory Herbs Like Curamin Can Help Fight Inflammation Pain

By Darrell Miller

Anti-inflammatory herbs reduce inflammations by acting on the body mechanics. These Anti-inflammatory herbs are usually applied externally to the affected area or taken internally. They are safe and effective method for treatment of itching, redness, swelling and local discomfort as well as internal inflammation.

Inflammation is, by its nature, a protective response. Some insult or injury will occur, ranging from infection to blunt injury to just plain overuse of a body part, and the body will respond with a group of physical and chemical changes that are designed to isolate the damaged body part and the infecting agent, if there is one. Although the causes are many, inflammation has some common characteristics namely pain, swelling, heat, redness, and loss of function of the part in question. One or all of these signs can indicate inflammation.

Although inflammation normally serves a protective response, it can get out of control and become damaging. Extreme pain can detract from quality of life, and loss of function of a body part can be either inconvenient or deadly, depending on whether we’re talking about the little finger or a vital organ. In some cases, such as allergies and autoimmune disorders, the inflammatory response is basically a mistake, a case of the immune system attacking when it has no real need to.

C-reactive protein, which is used as a measure of the body’s history of inflammation, is a better predictor of heart attacks than cholesterol. So clearly, there are times when it’s important to control inflammation. Tragically, anti-inflammatory drugs, both prescription and over the counter, kill people. Drug industry estimates put the death toll for these drugs in the hundreds of thousands over the past decade. And when you think about it, running a serious risk of death for the chance at reducing inflammation isn’t such a good deal.

This is why natural herbal companies have for years not formulated herbal combinations that have anti-inflammatory properties. Quality brands such as Source Naturals and Europharma can obtain pure raw materials and package some of the finest natural vitamins and herbs on the market today. One such formula is curamin, which has powerful herbs such as Boswellia, turmeric, and amino acids like DLPA. All of which help the body naturally deal with inflammation in the body.

Both Boswellia and turmeric are considered ayurvedic herbs from Asian countries. For centuries traditional medicine practitioners have used these herbs and others to help defend against a large array of disease that strike man kind. These two herbs have more scientific backing then any other to date.

Fortunately, natural herbs have zero side effects unlike those over the counter or prescription drugs. An over dose of herbs can cause intestinal discomfort and diarrhea which is the extent of what may happen. Natural anti-inflammatory formulas come in capsule, tablet, and powder forms. Stop into your local or internet health food store for great anti-inflammatory herbs like Curamin.

Clashes in Nigeria kill hundreds, troops on alert

Monday, March 8, 2010

According to witness and media reports, at least two hundred people in Nigeria have been killed after pastoralists and villagers clashed near the city of Jos, which has been the source of repeated tension between Christians and Muslims.

Local authorities, however, contradicted witness reports, saying that there were eight casualties, as did Mark Lipdo, an aid worker for the Stefanus Foundation charity, who reported that at least a hundred people were dead.

Witness reports state that pastoralists started firing into the air in the village of Dogo Nahawa, about five kilometres south of Jos, at night, and attacked those who emerged from their homes. “They came around three o’clock in the morning and they started shooting into the air. The shooting was just meant to bring people from their houses and then when people came out they started cutting them with machetes,” commented Peter Jang, who lives in the village, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

According to the Agence France-Presse news agency, some of the victims were children.

Acting Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan said he had placed national troops on “red alert” following the clashes. “The acting president has placed all the security forces in the plateau and neighbouring states on red alert so as to stem any cross-border dimensions to this latest conflict,” read a statement released by his office. Armed forces are already present in Jos.

“The security services are on top of the situation,” said Jonathan’s spokesman Ima Niboro in an email statement to the Bloomberg news service.

In January, at least 400 people were killed and a further four thousand injured in the city of Jos after tensions between Christians and Muslims.
