More Than Child’s Play Using A Doctor Review Site To Choose A Pediatrician

More Than Child’s Play Using A Doctor Review Site To Choose A Pediatrician

Imagine that you, your spouse, and your two children move to a brand new city. Perhaps a job has placed you there. Maybe an older family member has fallen ill, and you needed to relocate to tend to them. Or, it’s possible that you and the family just needed a change of scenery. Now, imagine, that you find yourself sick with a raging sinus infection. You try to treat it yourself with over the counter medication, but then your children catch your bug. It gets so bad that they have to miss a day of school. Luckily, it’s a Friday, giving you Saturday and Sunday to come up with a game plan to get the family well. The problem is, they don’t have a doctor yet. And, since you’re in a new city, you don’t really have anyone to ask opinions of. You then turn to a trusty new tool known as the internet. A doctor review site can be a very helpful tool in helping you choose a medical care provider, including a pediatrician.Being that you want the absolute best health care for your kids, you might find yourself hesitant to use a doctor review site to help you find a doctor. However, sometimes circumstances may not leave you with too many other options. And secondly, it beats standing outside of a practitioners office with a clip board, polling patients about their experiences. First and foremost, you’ll want to choose the most credible website offering doctor reviews. Many of them are free, some of them you may have to pay a fee for. There is nothing that says that a pay site is going to give you better or worse information, so it’s up to you to choose. Take a look at a handful of them, and see which ones seem the most credible and informed. Choosing a doctor that your children are going to see can be a stressful process. When browsing a doctor’s review, it’s important that you don’t get discouraged if you read something negative. When it comes down to it, no matter how many years of schooling and residency a doctor goes through, a person is still a person, and people will find things to disagree on. If one patient feels that their child was misdiagnosed regarding a minor issue, what’s to stop them from going on the internet and writing a scathing review about the doctor? It’s important that you take anything you read with a grain of salt. However, you’re also (clearly) not going to want to choose a doctor that has an abundance of negative feedback. Try to read every review of a doctor that you can, and make a comfortable decision. Also, make sure to carefully read the reasons why a person gave a bad review. Was the doctor cold-hearted and outright mean to the reviewer’s child? Or was the reviewer upset because the doctor didn’t enter the room wearing a clown nose and holding candy? It’s important to evaluate your child, and try to determine what his needs are. A clown nose can be the funniest or the scariest thing in the world to your little one. On the same note, you also want to make sure that you don’t make a decision based on one astoundingly positive review. You may read a review that tells a touching tale about how a doctor casually noticed and insisted treatment of something that could have turned into deadly cancer if left alone, essentially saving a child’s life. If you are sold on this one article, however, you could miss the next one that addresses the fact that the very same doctor missed an early warning sign of a disease that has since left the child in a wheelchair. While these are both very extreme cases, the point is to research thoroughly before making a decision.Aside from obtaining information about a doctor’s demeanor and competence, a doctor review site can also give you more technical information, such as if a doctor is taking new patients, and what sort of insurance plans his practice receives payment from. When it comes down to it though, the most important part is knowing that your child is in good hands when it comes to health care, and these websites can be very helpful. Remember though, don’t kick yourself if the doctor you choose doesn’t amaze you when you see him in person. Chances are, he can at least get you some antibiotics for your kids to get well, and you can choose to see a new doctor next time. You can get the children back to school on Monday, and don’t worry, they’ll thank you later.

England: Multi-storey carpark in Liverpool gutted by fire, 1,300 vehicles destroyed

Thursday, January 4, 2018

A fire on Sunday night in the seven-storey carpark for the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England destroyed almost all the vehicles parked inside and led to cancellation of the final evening of the Liverpool International Horse Show and evacuation of nearby blocks of flats. The blaze reportedly started with a parked Range Rover Discovery.

Investigators with the fire brigade stated that they believe the fire began with an accidental engine fire in the Range Rover at about 4.30 pm. The first call was made at 4.42 and firefighters arrived eight minutes after that. Ultimately twelve engines and 85 firefighters were involved in combatting the blaze. Aerial appliances were used and also three high-volume pumps. Fed by the fuel in vehicles parked inside, the temperature of the fire in the carpark is believed to have reached as high as 1,000°C. It was too hot to be extinguished with water from hydrants, so a high-volume pump was used to draw water from the River Mersey, and two more were brought from other fire brigades in the region.

The carpark has seven storeys and a capacity of 1,600 vehicles, and approximately 1,300 were parked in it when the fire broke out. According to Dan Stephens, chief fire officer for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, almost all of them were destroyed, with the exception of a few parked on the top level and at corners. “With these very high temperatures, you were never going to put the fire out without the whole building taking hold. The speed at which the fire spreads means you simply aren’t going to put it out,” said Stephens.

The carpark itself was severely damaged; according to Joe Anderson, the mayor of Liverpool. It is not in danger of collapsing but will have to be demolished, which will be difficult with the many burned-out cars still inside it, Anderson told the BBC.

According to Stephens, there were no serious injuries: one woman injured her hand, and two people were treated for smoke inhalation. A spokesman for the Echo Arena also stated that all animals were safe. All horses were successfully evacuated from the carpark and then removed from the stables after smoke spread to them. Six dogs were also rescued unharmed, two on a lower level in the early stages of the fire and four that had been left in a car on the top level, freed by firefighters on Monday after the fire was put out.

The final evening of the four-day Liverpool International Horse Show had been scheduled to begin at 7.30, and had to be cancelled. Many attendees were stranded in the city on New Year’s Eve night. Merseyside police directed people to the Pullman Hotel, where Red Cross assistance was available, and the Liverpool City Council set up an assistance centre at the Lifestyles Gym. A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers has said that insurance companies will “move very quickly” to reimburse owners whose vehicles were destroyed.

Nearby blocks of flats were evacuated because of the smoke. Eyewitnesses reported hearing what they at first thought were firecrackers, then “multiple explosions”, “bangs and popping”, “the bangs of car windows exploding”. People reported leaving everything in their cars, including their cellphones, and running for their lives.

Mayor Anderson tweeted that cuts to fire services over the last two years made it significantly harder to fight the fire and might have caused it not to be controllable. He also suggested that fire safety in multi-storey carparks had not been sufficiently considered and that installing sprinklers in them might help stop future fires before they become unmanageable, in a letter to Nick Hurd, a member of Parliament.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Surgeons reattach boy’s three severed limbs

Tuesday, March 29, 2005A team of Australian surgeons yesterday reattached both hands and one foot to 10-year-old Perth boy, Terry Vo, after a brick wall which collapsed during a game of basketball fell on him, severing the limbs. The wall gave way while Terry performed a slam-dunk, during a game at a friend’s birthday party.

The boy was today awake and smiling, still in some pain but in good spirits and expected to make a full recovery, according to plastic surgeon, Mr Robert Love.

“What we have is parts that are very much alive so the reattached limbs are certainly pink, well perfused and are indeed moving,” Mr Love told reporters today.

“The fact that he is moving his fingers, and of course when he wakes up he will move both fingers and toes, is not a surprise,” Mr Love had said yesterday.

“The question is more the sensory return that he will get in the hand itself and the fine movements he will have in the fingers and the toes, and that will come with time, hopefully. We will assess that over the next 18 months to two years.

“I’m sure that he’ll enjoy a game of basketball in the future.”

The weight and force of the collapse, and the sharp brick edges, resulted in the three limbs being cut through about 7cm above the wrists and ankle.

Terry’s father Tan said of his only child, the injuries were terrible, “I was scared to look at him, a horrible thing.”

The hands and foot were placed in an ice-filled Esky and rushed to hospital with the boy, where three teams of medical experts were assembled, and he was given a blood transfusion after experiencing massive blood loss. Eight hours of complex micro-surgery on Saturday night were followed by a further two hours of skin grafts yesterday.

“What he will lose because it was such a large zone of traumatised skin and muscle and so on, he will lose some of the skin so he’ll certainly require lots of further surgery regardless of whether the skin survives,” said Mr Love said today.

The boy was kept unconscious under anaesthetic between the two procedures. In an interview yesterday, Mr Love explained why:

“He could have actually been woken up the next day. Because we were intending to take him back to theatre for a second look, to look at the traumatised skin flaps, to close more of his wounds and to do split skin grafting, it was felt the best thing to do would be to keep him stable and to keep him anaesthetised.”

Professor Wayne Morrison, director of the respected Bernard O’Brien Institute of Microsurgery and head of plastic and hand surgery at Melbourne’s St Vincent’s Hospital, said he believed the operation to be a world first.

Dog flu spreads across the US

Saturday, October 15, 2005

Dogs are normally resistant to most flu strains. Since about 2000, a new strain of dog flu has been spreading in America, and there’s no vaccine to prevent it.

To limit exposure to the flu, some dog owners are avoiding public places like dog shows and parks. Since the flu can spread where groups of dogs are housed, some dog owners are nervous about the practice of putting their pets in kennels. According to Edward Dubovil, director of the animal virology lab at Cornell University, 100% of dogs appear to be susceptible to infection by this new flu strain. It is estimated that 1-5% of infected dogs are dying from this flu strain. The symptoms of dog flu are akin to those of kennel cough, a more common and less serious illness.

Starting in 2004 there have been many outbreaks of flu at dog race tracks. Since early in 2004, researchers have been working to characterize the type of flu that is infecting dogs. In September of 2005 it was reported that this dog flu strain had crossed over from horses to dogs. This type of flu virus has been infecting horses for at least 40 years. It is expected that existing flu vaccines for horses can soon be adapted for use in dogs.

The spread of a horse flu virus to dogs is an example of what could happen with bird flu. Currently the bird flu is transmitted from birds to humans but does not spread easily from person to person. The new strain of dog flu shows signs of having been genetically modified from the original horse-preferring virus strain making it easy to transmit from dog to dog. Future genetic modifications of bird flu could better adapt it to humans and allow it to spread from person to person. The chance of such viral evolution can be reduced by limiting exposure of humans to bird flu.

At this time, the new dog flu virus strain does not seem to be a danger for humans. However, humans will be monitored for signs of infection by new genetic variants of the dog flu. Due to the close physical association between pet dogs and humans, a flu strain that could jump from dogs to humans would be of great concern. Recently evolved virus strains that jump from one species to another are often particularly lethal because the newly infected species may have little or no immunity to the new virus strain.

4 Useful Guidelines For Negotiating Furniture During An Agreement To Sell A House

4 Useful Guidelines For Negotiating Furniture During An Agreement To Sell A House

By Danica Reynes

To effectively negotiate furniture into the sales agreement for a house, you should identify in advance any furniture that you are interested in selling or buying, let the realtor know your terms and expectations, don’t be afraid to receive or make a counteroffer, and closely examine the sales contract.

When purchasing or selling a home you can expect to do a great deal of negotiating and bargaining. Common points of discussion between sellers and buyers can include the price of the homes for sale as well as what items are included in the sales agreement such as furniture. Here is advice on the best way to successfully negotiate the furniture during the real estate transaction process:

Earmark early on any furniture you might be interested in selling or purchasing

If you’re selling, have a clear list of which items of furniture you don’t mind selling with the house. When deals are in a stalemate, this is usually when furniture is added to the sale. But it is good to be prepared in case your buyer brings up the topic of including additional items in the package. If you are a buyer, you should make sure to identify any items in the house that you might be interested in when you are allowed to see inside. Make a list of furniture that you would find to be difficult or costly to replace.

It is important that you explain to the realtor what it is you want

When you have pointed out the times you desire to sell or purchase, you should write these down and give your real estate agent the list. The realtor will be responsible for presenting the terms and handling the negotiation between the buyer and seller. For buyers, it is important that you let the realtor know what your expectations of the deal are. Sellers should be wary when it comes to disposing of a lot of furniture quickly. you may want to hold back on offering high-cost pieces early in the negotiation, but you should let the realtor know your terms. If you determine that the potential homebuyer needs additional encouragement to pursue the purchase you can add your more expensive furniture items to the package.

There is no need to be afraid about making or getting a counteroffer

If you are a seller, you should be prepared for your initial offer to be rejected and for the possibility that you will receive a counter proposal. If you are presented with a counteroffer, look over it to see if the terms and conditions are consistent with your needs and then make a decision about whether you want to add furniture to the agreement. If the seller’s proposal has room for negotiation then the buyer should not refrain from voicing his/her alternative proposition.

Thoroughly read any sales contract before signing

The seller should be able to provide a clear sales contract detailing the terms they are selling under. Double check it to see if it is satisfactory and will not put you at a disadvantage. It is essential for buyers to examine the contract of their seller as to be aware of any furniture or other items included in the transaction. You can also have your lawyer review it to make sure you do not miss any of the fine print.

Buying or selling a house is a major endeavor; so, buyers and sellers need to be ready to take on all necessary points of negotiation.

Singapore Airlines bid for China Eastern Airlines unsuccessful

Wednesday, January 9, 2008

A bid made by Singapore Airlines for a 24% stake in China Eastern Airlines was turned down by minority shareholders.

Talks about a sale started in March 2007 when Singapore Airlines and China Eastern started negotiations about a possible deal. According to Forbes the deal would have helped China Eastern’s earnings and accelerate the consolidation and would have improved the market position of China’s third-largest airline. Talks went on throughout the year and both companies suspended trading of their shares on May 21, 2007, according to a AFP press release.

The vote took place at a shareholder meeting in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China. According to Financial Times Online, the blocking of the SA bid by minority shareholders is bad news for China Eastern Airlines managers, who were and still are in full support of Singapore Airlines, which the Singaporean government owns a 55% stake in via Temasek Holdings.

Financial Times Online says this is most likely due to the fact that Air China not having made any formal bids yet, instead creating many media rumors about a possible purchase. The bid by Air China, that is likely to be larger than that of Singapore Airlines, may be supported by Cathay Pacific, who are in a cross-shareholding relationship with China National Aviation Corporation, the parent company of Air China.
