Virgin Media investors want to discuss company’s strategy

Virgin Media announced weak results last week, in part due to competition from Sky. Virgin Media lost 47,000 customers from January to March 2007, while Sky gained 51,000 customers in the same time period.

Franklin Mutual Advisers, which has 9.4% of the Virgin Media shares (Sir Richard Branson owns 11%) wants to have a meeting with Virgin Media about its “strategic direction, corporate governance and management”. Franklin Mutual Advisers is known to take great interest in the companies in which it invests.

This has caused many of the other investors of Virgin Media to demanding meetings with the management of the company. The demands are due to confusion among shareholders at the direction in which the company is heading, The Guardian reports. After the attempt to buy ITV was stopped last year, the shareholders think that Virgin Media may lose its battle with Sky and TalkTalk.

Another issue causing concerns amongst investors is the £25.2 million pay cheques for the top seven executives of Virgin Media. Virgin Media reported a £15.3 million loss last year.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

If youre like most Americans, you have some sort of credit card debt. If youre paying upwards of 10% and even 20% on those credit cards, then chances are you arent making much headway when it comes to paying them off.

Turn on any TV or pick up any newspaper and youll find the home equity loan or HELOC (home equity line of credit) market is directly targeting consumers strapped with high-interest credit card debt.

The upside? Most home equity loans or HELOCs run between 7% and 9%, a much better rate than the 18% to 21% of store credit cards. This alone could save a consumer hundreds to thousands of dollars over the life of a balance. Up to $100,000 of home equity loan interest payments are tax-deductible. Minimum payments are usually lower, and principal is paid down much faster.

The downside? Your debt is now tied to your home. If you default on the home equity loan or HELOC, you could lose your house. For anyone with even a slight tendency towards undisciplined use of credit cards, consolidation through home equity may be disastrous. There are usually closing costs associated with these types of second mortgages, so dont forget to subtract those amounts from any interest saved.

Before you make a final decision, consider the following factors.

How much will you actually save on interest? There are a multitude of financial calculators on the internet to help you determine what you will pay in interest over the lifetime of a credit card balance. Compare this to what you will pay with a HELOC or home equity loan. Dont forget to factor in closing costs such as loan application fees, appraiser fees, mortgage filing taxes, etc.

How much do you owe? The general rule is to consolidate at $10,000 or more, but simply transfer to cards with lower fixed rates if your balance is less. If you have reasonable credit, you can usually find credit cards with lower fixed rates and transfer your balances. Even if you have to re-apply for new cards every nine months to a year, it will be worth the effort.

What caused your credit card debt to begin with? If it was a one-time expense such as college tuition, medical emergency, job loss or weddingand youre generally good about living within your meansthen debt consolidation is probably an excellent option.

If your credit card debt stems from trips to the mall, a big-screen TV, a cruise and lots of other stuff you dont even remember, then chances are consolidation is NOT a good option for you. Regardless of your balance, youll be better served transferring balances to lower-rate cards.

Regardless of what you decide, make sure to read the fine print on all home equity or credit card offers. Look for fees and closing costs, and factor them into your decision. Avoid the urge to medicate your debt pain by making hasty decisions. Take a few days to mull over offers youre considering.

Either option will save you money and start you down the road to debt freedom, so examine your options, make your decision, and get started!

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio endorses Mitt Romney for president

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida endorsed former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney for president during the Wednesday night broadcast of the Fox News program Hannity. As justification for his decision, Rubio argued that Romney will be the Republican Party presidential nominee and offers “a stark contrast to …[President Barack Obama]’s record.”

Rubio, who is Cuban American, took office in 2011 after defeating former Florida governor Charlie Crist. He often receives mention as a potential running mate for the still-undecided 2012 Republican Party presidential nominee.

The Associated Press estimates that Romney currently leads his opponents for the nomination, Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia, with 568 of the 1,144 delegates necessary to win. 1,258 delegates remain in play.

Gingrich and Santorum are continuing their presidential runs in the hope of forcing a brokered convention to deny Romney the nomination. Rubio warned of such a scenario in the Hannity interview, commenting that it would “be a recipe for disaster” and would help re-elect the Democrat, Obama.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush offered a similar justification in his endorsement of Romney earlier this month, calling on the party to “unite behind Governor Romney”.

Other potential vice-presidential nominees such as New Jersey governor Chris Christie and Virginia governor Bob McDonnell have already thrown their support to Romney.

Rubio claims to have not spoken with Romney about the vice-presidential nomination, and has previously denied any interest in it.

Major snowstorm hits midwestern United States

A major winter storm is dropping snow, ice, and freezing rain across the Midwestern United States.

Over 12 inches (30cm) of snow is expected in parts of Ohio and Indiana. Along the Ohio River, freezing rain and sleet is expected to make driving hazardous. The precipitation is forecast to continue through the evening Tuesday and into early Wednesday morning, before moving out towards the East Coast.

Blizzard warnings have been issued for much of Northwest Ohio and Northern Indiana, with very cold temperatures, considerable snowfall, and blowing and drifting snow.

Many flights have been canceled or delayed at Port Columbus International Airport, especially those destined for other cities in the midwest.

Schools have been canceled, and some businesses are sending employees home early. The Ohio State University, University of Cincinnati and many other colleges decided to cancel classes, sending home all non-essential staff.

New ‘deadly’ sexual enhancement products have been found in Singaporean markets and can cause serious side effects on users.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) announced the presence of the illegal drugs, known as Power 1 Walnut, Santi bovine penis erecting capsule, Zhong Hua Niu Bian and fake Cialis, which have been discovered over the past 3 months. Santi bovine penis erecting capsule has been found to contain high amounts of glibenclamide, a potent drug used to treat diabetes. The tablets also contain sildenafil and tadalafil – potent western medicines used to treat erectile dysfunction. Zhong Hua Niu Bian also contains sildenafil and glibenclamide.

High consumption of the tablets can be potentially deadly as the glibenclamide in the capsules can lead to drastically reduced blood sugar levels which can lead to seizures, stroke, coma or death. Consuming half of a Power 1 Walnut capsule has led to unconsciousness and frothing at the mouth.

Consumption of Power 1 Walnut has led to the death of a middle age man last week who fell into a coma. Currently, one death and two cases of coma have been reported from the total of 89 hospitalised cases linked with the consumption of the illegal drugs. It has been revealed that patients obtained the drugs by purchasing them from illegal peddlers located in various parts of Singapore.

The HSA has advised people to stop consuming the drugs and to report on any cases of consumption to them.

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald has performed an interview with Dr Isabella Margara, a London-based member of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE). In the interview Margara sets out the communist response to current events in Greece as well as discussing the viability of a communist economy for the nation. She also hit back at Petros Tzomakas, a member of another Greek far-left party which criticised KKE in a previous interview.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.
