Canada pursues new nuclear research reactor to produce medical isotopesFriday, July 10, 2009
The Saskatchewan provincial government alongside the University of Saskatchewan (U of S) have come together to establish a CA$500 million, 10 megawatts research nuclear reactor to produce medical isotopes.
“In 1949 … cobalt-60 treatment was tried for the first time here in Saskatchewan, where it saved a woman battling cervical cancer. Maybe we can lead again in terms of nuclear medicine,” said Brad Wall, the Premier of Saskatchewan, “Governments should be involved in pure research. We’re dealing with some circumstances as they present themselves”
“We’ve had faculty that are interested in this. We have an issue of national importance, We see a reason why the U of S and the province could assist in this national issue. We see how it could help the country. We see how it could build on the university’s research strength,” said Richard Florizone, U of S vice-president of finance and resources.
The research conducted at the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron on campus would be enhanced by a research reactor.
“In the case of a power reactor, in Saskatchewan we have much better alternatives. In the case of a medical isotopes research reactor, this may be a circumstance where the benefits outweigh the risks,” said Peter Prebble, director of energy and water policy for the Saskatchewan Environmental Society.
The nuclear reactor at Chalk River, Ontario in Canada was shut down on Thursday, May 14 by the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) due to a leak of heavy water and will not re-open until late 2009 or spring of 2010.
The repairs of the NRU are complex and challenging. “I’ve heard it described as . . . trying to change the oil in your car from your living room. We’re faced with conducting remote investigations in a radioactive environment with high radiation fields, conducting the examinations and inspections through small openings in the top of the reactor and accessing over great distances,” said David Cox, director of the NRU engineering task force.
“The unplanned shutdown of the NRU will result in a significant shortage of medical isotopes in Canada, and in the world, this summer,” said Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources.
The Petten reactor in the Netherlands is another of the six extant nuclear reactors globally. It must also be shut down between mid July and mid August.
Medical isotopes are used in diagnostic procedures for cancer, heart disease and other medical conditions. When radioactive isotopes are injected into the body, radiologists can view higher radiation via medical imaging, enabling them to make a more accurate diagnosis.
What Are Dental Implants, and How Are They Used

Dental implants are essentially artificial roots made of titanium or titanium alloy that are inserted into the jaw. When in place, they are used to support components such as dentures and bridges. A dental care dentist in Toronto can provide implants for people who have lost teeth through accident, decay, gum disease, or for some other reason.
The most common type of implants are known as endosteal (\’in the bone\’). There are a number of different types, but are typically screws, blades or cylinders. They are inserted directly into the jawbone and can support one or more dentures. Endosteal implants are mainly used as an alternative solution for people with removable dentures or bridges.
Other (less often) used type of implants are known as subperiosteal Con the bone\’). These are inserted on top of the gum and underneath the jaw. When in place, metal posts protrude through the gums, the necessary components being attached to these posts. These type of implants are suitable for people who have insufficient bone for the attachment of endosteal implants.
In order to be suitable for implant work, patients need to be in good general health. They will also ideally have an adequate level of bone density in the jaw, and have healthy gums that are disease-free. Those who drink and or smoke heavily may be declined treatment. A serious drawback of these habits is their effect on post-procedure healing. They can also negatively affect existing teeth which can complicate procedure planning.
As far as the number of implants needed, this will depend on the individual patient. Patients with a good level of bone density in the jaw will generally require fewer implants than those with poorer bone density. While one implant will be needed to replace one tooth, several teeth will not necessarily require an implant per tooth. A single implant can often be perfectly adequate to support several teeth. For example, as few as four implants can support an entire row of teeth, although five or six will more often be used.
A common issue for many patients is poor bone density in the upper-rear jaw. This area can also be problematic due to the close proximity of the sinus. This can be overcome with a procedure know as sinus augmentation. Essentially, this involves raising the level of the sinus membrane and adding bone to the jaw. Once the work is done, implants can be fitted, although the patient will need to wait for between four and nine months to allow the mouth and bone to fully heal.
It\’s important to note that any existing oral health problems need to be dealt with before any implant work can be undertaken. In fact, implant work is often sought by patients as a result of long-standing dental problems. Common issues like periodontal (gum) disease, decay and abscesses must be addressed before implant work can begin.
Overall, dental implant work is often straightforward and provides highly satisfactory results for most patients. There is of course some discomfort involved, but modern dental procedures make the whole process of dental work vastly easier to bear than in the past. The American satirist Stephen Colbert has announced that he will run for the Presidency of the United States. He made his announcement on his mock news show The Colbert Report.
However, Colbert said that he would only run in his home state of South Carolina as a favorite son. He also said that he would represent both major political parties: the Republicans and the Democrats. It is not known how far Colbert will go with his character during his electoral run.
Colbert has hosted The Colbert Report, a spin-off to another satirical television series, The Daily Show, since its creation in 2005. “I didn’t have a job back then. I wonder what it was like to have a job back then. I am sure I could ask a dentist or a surgeon. He would know.” On the show he plays a right-wing political pundit, based on real-life pundits such as Bill O’Reilly and Stone Phillips. Colbert has been credited with popularizing certain words such as “Truthiness”, meaning to believe something intuitively, without regard for actual facts, logic or evidence.
Filling in for New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd on Sunday, Colbert wrote: “I am not ready to announce yet — even though it’s clear that the voters are desperate for a white, male, middle-aged, Jesus-trumpeting alternative.”

Cruise decided to fly all three chefs out to the United States at a cost of €14,500. According to the Daily Mail the chefs cooked the celebrity tagliatelle ragu, veal, and chocolate tiramisu.
St. Lucian footballer Philip Tisson shot dead in Brooklyn, New YorkTuesday, August 31, 2010
Philip Tisson, a member of the Saint Lucia national football team, has been killed by a gunshot wound to the head in New York. Tisson was in New York participating in the Digicel Caribbean Cup tournament.
Several members of the team were at Tropiks Bar and Grill in Brooklyn celebrating an earlier victory over Saint Kitts and Nevis. At 4.30am, Tisson entered a parked car outside of Tropiks. While seated in the rear of the car, Tisson was shot in the head. Three women were in the car at the time of the shooting, with one requiring medical attention for a shoulder wound.
According to teammate Sheldon Emmanuel, Tisson left the bar at 3:30 A.M. (EST) with an unknown woman. Tisson’s brother remained with his teammates and only found out about the shooting afterwards by phone. Emmanuel also stated that no one witnessed Tission involved an argument with anyone. A police official said that there are no known suspects. Police are waiting for video evidence.
Tisson had scored in the Saint Kitts and Nevis game. St. Lucia advanced to the finals with their win over Saint Kitts and Nevis to face Jamaica. The team stated they will still play in the final on Sunday “despite the loss of a friend, a teammate and one of their most powerful players”.
In St. Lucia, Tisson is survivied by his three year-old daughter.

Liberal minority government elected in QuebecTuesday, March 27, 2007
According to preliminary official results, Jean Charest‘s Parti libéral du Québec have won a minority government in today’s Quebec general election with 48 seats in total. The Action démocratique du Québec (ADQ) are currently in second with 41 seats, the Parti Québécois (PQ) are in third place with 36 seats. About 63 seats are required for a majority government in Quebec. The Quebec Liberals won 76 seats in the 2003 election.
Premier Jean Charest, 48, won a close race for his seat in Sherbrooke, despite having already been declared defeated by a PQ candidate. Quebec’s chief electoral officer telephoned the premier to relay the news that he had retained his seat. CBC’s French language network Télévision de Radio-Canada indicated the initial results were erroneous.
The ADQ have won well over the seats needed for them to have official party status. In the 2003 Quebec election they won a total of 4 seats, and would have needed 8 more seats to obtain party status. In the 2003 election, the ADQ garnered 21% of the vote. If the results of the 2007 election holds, with 31% of the vote for the ADQ, it would represent a significant gain for the party.
The Liberal campaign, under Charest’s leadership, stumbled in the latter stages of the campaign when Charest allotted a $700 million windfall, in the form of a transfer from the federal Conservative government, to tax cuts for Quebecers. The move to apply the money so quickly to tax cuts during the campaign, resonated with some as a cynical move to buy votes, and may have harmed the Liberal chances.
The results represent a substantial drop in fortune for the PQ, which entered the election with 45 seats. It is expected that PQ leader André Boisclair may be forced to resign the leadership.
This is the first minority government in Quebec in more than 100 years since the year 1878. Compared to the 2003 election, voter turnout is up by approximately 3%, according to Elections Quebec.
