Arizona bans abortion for genetic abnormalities

Friday, April 30, 2021

On Tuesday, the Governor of the US state of Arizona Doug Ducey signed into law a bill banning abortion if sought solely because of a foetus’ genetic abnormality.

Senate Bill 1457, which stalled twice for criticism by opponents of abortion, passed both chambers of the Republican-controlled Arizona Legislature last week in a party-line vote, amended twice along the way to alleviate concerns by two hesitant Republicans.

The bill makes it a Class 6 felony, the least severe, to seek or perform an abortion “because of a genetic abnormality of the child”, defined as “the presence or presumed presence of an abnormal gene expression in an unborn child”, but not a “severe fetal abnormality” considered “incompatible with life.” Intimidating someone to get an abortion and soliciting or accepting monies to finance an abortion for this purpose has been made a Class 3 felony.

The bill also allows the unborn child’s father or, in case the mother is under 18, a maternal grandparent to sue, as well as including the applicability of state law to “an unborn child at every stage of development”, which Senator Kirsten Engel and Representative Melody Hernandez wrote in a submitted minority report “would open up the potential for prosecutors to charge persons including the pregnant individual whose conduct results in a woman having a miscarriage with murder, manslaughter or child endangerment.”

Other provisions of the bill includes a prohibition on the distribution “via courier, delivery or mail service” of abortion-inducing drugs, a ban on any public educational institution from performing or aiding non-life saving abortion, a ban on the use of public or tax monies paid by the state or students for university research involving foetal remains or somatic cell nuclear transfer, or any state money towards organisations providing abortion care, and requiring all foetal remains to be buried or cremated.

KYMA-DT reported Ducey is an anti-abortion rights governor who ran on the Republican ballot and has never vetoed anti-abortion legislation. In a statement, Duckey said, “[t]here’s immeasurable value in every single life — regardless of genetic makeup […] We will continue to prioritize protecting life in our preborn children, and this legislation goes a long way in protecting real human lives.” The news release, originally published on his website also read, “[w]ith this legislation, Arizona remains among the top pro-life states in the nation.”

Senator Nancy Barto said, according to the release “[w]e need to protect our most vulnerable, especially those with treatable genetic conditions […] They are loved, integral members of our community that make Arizona whole”. Cathi Herrod, president of Center for Arizona Policy said in her own news release, according to the Associated Press “[t]oday, Arizonans win.”

Representative Diego Espinoza wrote in a tweet, “I’m disappointed to see Arizona moving in this direction, ignoring the needs and desires of doctors, women, and families for an extreme political agenda.” Representative and House Democratic Leader Reginald Bolding wrote in a statement “it’s disturbing and wrong that the legislature is not focusing on policies to help [women], and instead is stripping away the fundamental freedom to choose if, when, and how to start or grow a family.”

In a letter shared to a Facebook post, the union United Campus Workers at Arizona State University urged last Saturday to the Arizona Board of Regents, university president Michael M. Crow and University of Arizona president Robert D. Robbins to “immediately speak out against SB 1457”, calling it “a blatant attack on reproductive freedom”.

Overview Of Resolving Aviation Disputes In Uae

Overview Of Resolving Aviation Disputes In Uae

These guidelines have considerably helped developing a lawful structure for the aeronautics business. The aviation sector, by its very presence, tremendously affects the worldwide economy. As an incorporation of monetary interests and global glory, aeronautics triggers an enormous number of disputes and contradictions. TopAviation Lawyers of Dubai have witnessed considerable number of aviation disputes and wish to elaborate the process of resolving aviation disputes in UAE.

Aviation sector in all its activities is inclusive of aircraft industry and manufacturing industry. In addition, there are flights for regular passenger travel or for commercial purposes and there are flights used for military purposes. The Laws governing the same may differ in applicability. The criticalness of aviation cannot be understated as all countries are associated with each other through aviation sector. Aeronautics encourages exchange, travel and the upkeep of connections between nations. Flying has expanded the personal satisfaction for some around the globe. Aeronautics triggers a great deal of debates and discontent since it is a joining of financial interests and global renown.

Reasons for disputes in Aviation Sector

There are a few reasons for clashes in air transportation. The causes can be separated into non-business and business debates. The non-business are those managed by bilateral arrangements. The Chicago Convention controls commercial debates. The most common reasons for disputes in aviation sector involves limitations in marketing of airlines, selling tickets, and settling currency issues. The subsequent basic reason is the unloading of air transport administrations. The third reason is confined admittance to travel planners and online reservation frameworks. Fourthly, separation concerning frequency of flights and limit and other working limitations. Fifthly, biased charges for Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Air Traffic Navigation (ATN). Ultimately, ground taking care of limitations and other taxes imposed by any government or authority.

Dispute Resolution

The dispute resolution in aviation industry can be done either outside the court or through the assistance of legal authorities. Primarily speaking about non-legal ways of dispute resolution, it involves mediation, conciliation and negotiations. The non-legal or political methods are generally utilised to resolve disputes in non-commercial aviation sector, as it is always backed by other political tactics. However, for other commercial disputes or conflicts, it is always advised to seek recourse through legal methods. Wherein, legal methods involve arbitration or approaching a relevant court authority such as International Court of Justice. Global Civil Aviation is a source of conflicts at a global level. Peaceful dispute settlement strategies are basic for the goal of global common flight disputes, wherein, negotiation and conciliation are the two commonly utilised methods for dispute resolution at an international level. These strategies have given the fundamental hardware to the continuation and development of the international aeronautics industry. This proposes an improved framework for settling worldwide common aviation disputes in which arbitration or court orders, while still to be attempted with caution, will introduce a more suitable choice that is bound to explain the rights and commitments of the parties in question.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.

A Guide To Player Props Bet

A Guide To Player Props Bet

There is an increase in the popularity of NFL player props. More legal U.S. sportsbooks are not only offering player props within their betting portfolio, but they are doing so with greater focus and variety than ever before. What is an NFL player prop?NFL props are side wagers not determined by the outcome of the game. Typically, they have to do with player statistics. When betting them, you’re rooting for the outcome you picked to happen during the game, but the result of an NFL player prop is independent of the game result. One reason for the growth in popularity of NFL player props is because they are attractive to daily fantasy sports (DFS) players and general fantasy football competitors alike. With those games built around individual player output, transitioning to NFL player props as a form of entertainment or a more severe endeavor is natural.Example of an NFL player propAn example of an NFL player prop could be an over/under total Patrick Mahomes’ passing yards in a game. Like standard bets, you will often find these with a betting line for both sides of the wager.Mahomes over 315.5 passing yards (-140)Mahomes under 315.5 passing yards (+120)Using this example, a $110 wager on the over can win a bettor $76.92 for a total payout of $186.92 should Mahomes throw for more than 315.5 passing yards. A $110 wager on the under would return $120 for a total payout of $230 should Mahomes throw for less than 315.5 yards. You will also frequently see two sides of an NFL player prop with equal pricing, such as -110 or -120.Another example of an NFL player prop is a yes/no proposition. Such as, will Saquon Barkley score a touchdown?Barkley to score a touchdown (-320)Barkley not to score a touchdown (+270)Yes/no player props can also be displayed as over/under 0.5.The more popular a player is, the higher the likelihood that more player props will be available for that player.Types of NFL player propsThere are different NFL props types available. Here are a few of the types of NFL player props you can see listed in a sportsbook: QB passing yards, QB completions, QB interceptions, RB rushing yards, RB touchdowns, RB rushing plus receiving yards, WR receiving yards, WR receptions, and Two-player head-to-head props.Where can you bet NFL player props?NFL player props are widely available at legal U.S. sportsbooks, and the selection is growing. If you search online, there are only a few regulated sports betting operators that regularly offer NFL player props. The operators are known for their extensive props offering for the Super Bowl every year, including a ton of NFL player props. Please look at the Online Sports Betting section for more on where you can bet NFL player props. There is no dearth of available outlets to wager on NFL props, but that doesn’t mean you should dive in with the first sportsbook you see. As with any sports bet, it is important to shop around for the best price you can find.

Getting even with the law: Wikinews interviews New York City’s ‘Jimmy Justice’

Tuesday, April 22, 2008

“What bothers me is watching an officer write someone a summons and then commit the exact same violation with their official vehicle.

A civilian known as ‘Jimmy Justice’ who resides in New York City (NYC), New York, the largest city in the United States, has been videotaping NYC police officers and city workers, breaking the law while on the job.

Since 2007, he claims to have caught “hundreds of officers and other city employees violating the law,” and says he has them all on camera. He has posted his best confrontations with them to the video sharing website YouTube. As a result, Justice states that he has been asked to do a United States television show and Wikinews got an exclusive interview with him. For protection, Justice wished not to be called by his real name in fear of police retaliation.

Last year, Justice videotaped a police officer parking in front of a fire hydrant, but has only recently gained attention on social networking news sites such as Digg and reddit.com. So Wikinews contacted Mr. Justice, known as JimmyJustice4753 on YouTube, for an exclusive interview to find out what caused him to get revenge on the law.

On June 30, 2007, Justice caught officer E. Anderson of the NYPD, traffic division, parking directly in front of a fire hydrant while she went inside a restaurant to take a 15 minute lunch break.

“Do you think there is something wrong with parking a vehicle, blocking a fire hydrant,?” says Justice while following Anderson to her car after her meal.

“Mrs. Anderson I’m talking to you,” says Justice as Anderson ignores him. “You parked your vehicle blocking a fire hydrant. You are not allowed to do that. Somebody else would get a ticket for that. Why are you allowed to do it? You should be ashamed of yourself Mrs. Anderson.”

By this time, the incident has gained the interest of people nearby the scene and passing it. One unidentified woman, who claims to be a retired NYC police officer decides to intervene stating that people “are not supposed to film any police, [or] anybody employed with the police department because of the terrorism.” A short time later the woman walked off camera.

Since 2007 Justice says he has caught “hundreds of law enforcement officers and city officials” on “over 30 hours of video” violating laws from illegal U-turns in business districts to blocking bus stops and fire hydrants. Justice has only uploaded the “most colorful ones to YouTube” and recently, on April 8, 2008, Justice videotaped a NYPD tow truck officer blocking a hydrant while he also ate lunch inside a restaurant. According to NYC law, it is illegal for any vehicle to park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant and to park in front of a bus stop. It is also illegal for any person to make a U-turn in a business district. Fines for these violations can cost a driver up to US$115.00 for each violation occurred.

When Wikinews asked Justice why he decided to start filming the violations made by officials he answered, “what bothers me is watching an officer write someone a summons and then commit the exact same violation with their official vehicle. I started making these videos to remind the officers (and complacent civilians) that City employees have to abide by the same laws that they are paid to enforce. I plan on doing this and inspiring others to do this as well as a means of leveling the playing field against discourteous officers.”

“In NYC, the traffic cops are notorious for their draconian indiscretion in handing out summonses to civilians for petty violations. Obviously the laws are not enforced as a matter of public safety, but rather to raise revenue,” added Justice.

Justice makes little effort to get the violations on videotape saying “all I have to do to catch them is open my eyes.”

“The problem with abuse of authority is rampant in New York City. I take my video camera with me on the way to work and on the way to social events and band rehearsals and when I see action it takes me less than 4 seconds to have the camera out and in record mode,” states Justice.

His videos have drawn the attention of media and he has been featured on ABC’s ‘I-caught videos’ and Inside Edition. Justice also states that the popularity of his videos have gotten the attention producers in Hollywood, California and as a result, there are plans for a television show.

Since Justice began getting even with officials and their violations, he states that there has been a positive change in the communities.

“The publicity my videos have received has effected positive change in the community, but we still have a long road ahead of us,” added Justice.

As a result of his videos, at the time the NYPD launched an investigation into the violations, but it is not known if any officers were charged or punished. Justice himself has never been arrested, but has been assaulted.

“I have never been arrested for this yet but they have threatened me with arrest. I have been spit on, cursed at, assaulted, and I had 2 cameras broken already,” added Justice.

Day 1 report of Wikimania 2006

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Sunday, August 6, 2006

Wikimania 2006 is the second annual Wikimedia conference. Hosted by the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at the Harvard Law School campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, it began August 4 and will run until August 6.

Wikimania began with a keynote presentation from Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation. Wales played a short portion of a clip from a recent episode of U.S. television program The Colbert Report discussing Wikipedia. In the clip, Colbert says that “any website that has a longer entry on truthiness than Lutheranism has got its priorities straight.” His keynote continued by re-emphasising Wikimedia’s mission, as stated by Wales in a Slashdot interview: “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That’s what we’re doing”.

Wales stated that Wikipedia is “not as good as Britannica — yet”. Additionally, he also stated that in the coming year, Wikipedia will be making “a turn towards quality”. “We have always had this goal, but we all know we’re not there yet – in the coming years one of the themes is going to be a turn towards quality.” said Wales.

He then introduced Brad Patrick, the general counsel and recently-appointed interim CEO of Wikimedia. Patrick said he found Wikimedia after reading Wales’ list Ten Things That Will Be Free on Lawrence Lessig‘s blog. After discovering the Wikimedia Foundation, Patrick emailed Wales about meeting for lunch. He had lunch with Wales a few months later and was hired as general counsel shortly after.

Wales went on to describe Wikia, the company he co-founded with Angela Beesley. He announced that Wikia has received venture capital, allowing them to hire full-time engineers to work on the MediaWiki software. He emphasized that Wikia, has “a total commitment to free knowledge and respect for communities.”

Later, Wales announced that the One Laptop Per Child project will be including Wikipedia as the first element in the content repository. He also announced that the board has approved Wikiversity as “a center for the creation and use of free learning materials and activities”. Wikiversity will “create and host a range of free-content multilingual learning materials for all age groups in all languages”. It will be launched soon with a three language, six month, beta trial period.

Wales described a project called Wikiwyg: a WYSIWYG editor for the wiki. Wikiwyg is an attempt to make the wiki easier to edit. “An intelligence test by making it hard to edit, just does not work,” noted Wales. While the release date is uncertain both Wikia and Socialtext are devoting full-time engineers to the project.

Wales emphasized the need to focus on quality. He also briefly discussed the commitment in the German Wikipedia to rolling out a stable version. He stated that if we do not have it rolled out by next year’s keynote “we are making a big mistake”.

Wales finished his keynote by giving an update on his Ten Things That Will Be Free and proposing “that the foundation seek funding to hire community coordinator and recruiters for important languages where we currently do poorly”.

Other notable speakers included Ward Cunningham, Lawrence Lessig, Eben Moglen and many members of the Wikimedia communities.

The day wrapped up with a poster reception and a party celebrating Wikia’s 250,000 articles and Wikia’s founders Angela Beesley and Jimmy Wales birthdays.

Archived copies of many of the presentations are available on the Wikimania wiki.

Israel allows cash for Gazans

Thursday, December 11, 2008

Since the beginning of the Israeli blockade in the Gaza Strip, there have been two main shortages for the Gazans: food and money. Israel has allowed minimal food shipments in, but up until yesterday no cash had been let into the Strip. Heeding United Nations warnings that a blockade of cash flow to Gaza would cause a liquidity crisis, Israel allowed US$25 million into the Strip, where 1.5 million people are struggling to survive since the blockade imposed by Israel blocked all UN aid in early November.

The money will go to pay civil servants’ salaries, and will be given to those in most desperate need of food. However, Palestinian economy minister Kamal Hassuneh has warned that $70 to $75 million for salaries is needed and that the money should be transferred every month, not just once.

In addition to allowing much-needed cash into Gaza, Israel has also begun allowing reporters into the area and admitting aid workers to dock in Gaza ports.

The blockade is now in its second month after it began because of rocket fire eminating from the area.

Demystified: Fixed Rate Mortgage And Variable Rate Mortgage

Demystified: Fixed Rate Mortgage And Variable Rate Mortgage

Submitted by: Chris Mcguire

Fixed mortgage rates are decided by the price of government bonds and the bond yield. Investing in bonds are in general considered safer than stocks, and as soon as there is financial turmoil, investors normally will unload equities in preference to bonds, particularly Government bonds, and at the same time as the stock market is thriving, investors in all probability would make a higher return on investment in equities. This way there is a lower demand for bonds; as a result, their valuation decreases that add to their yield. On the other hand, as soon as the economy turns out to be less stable and stocks do not look as attractive, the demand for bonds rises that reduces their yields.

As soon as the governments long-term bond prices, for instance the 5 year, increases, this results in a lower returns, in general plummeting the five year borrowing costs for mortgage lenders who can then pass on these savings to customers in the shape of lower 5 year fixed mortgage rates. On the other hand, during these exceptionally odd times, caused by inadequate liquidity in the markets, across the world banks are timid to lend to each other and are flush with cash, soaring borrowing costs this results in lenders having to pass on this increase on to customers in the shape of high fixed mortgage rates.

When it comes to variable mortgage rates, Bank of Canada plays a huge role in influencing variable mortgage rates for the reason that overnight target rates are set by the bank and is described as, Intraday average interest rates between financial institutions/banks. On this, banks base their Prime Lending Rates and the Bank of Canada does not interfere on lender’s Prime Rates and are independently determined by each financial institution/banks, further these are based on the cost of short-term money.

Variable mortgage rates that are advertised by banks are directly depended on Prime lending rate, which means that the interest rate you will be paying is directly associated to the Prime rate, and will change each time this changes. As a result, if the Bank of Canada cuts rates by 1% or 100 basis points, lenders mostly follow the bank and reduce their Prime rate too, given that their cost of borrowing falls, this means that your payments on a variable rate mortgage will reduce. This is an excellent choice if interest rates are plummeting. However, at present due to economic crisis banks have stopped lending to each other in the short-term, for the reason that they are fearful they might not get their money back thanks to the volatility in the system. Accordingly, inter-bank lending rates have risen and this increased cost is now being passed on customers by increasing interest rates.

Now it all comes down to which is a better option, fixed rate mortgage or a variable rate mortgage. This in fact relies on, each person s condition and whether he or she can handle the varying mortgage rate payments both monetarily and psychologically for the reason that the last thing you would like to do is being concerned given that interest rates could rise. Otherwise if you would feel more relaxed knowing the stable fixed rate you would be paying, over the next few years. As a final point, it is up to you to choose which will be best for you fixed rate mortgage or variable rate mortgage.

New Zealand government denies financial assistance for Overlander

Monday, September 25, 2006

The New Zealand government today has announced that they will not provide financial assistance to the Overlander train service between Auckland and Wellington, which is set to stop service on September 30, if no assistance is forthcoming. ONTRACK will retain the North Island main trunk line, while looking for tourism operators to start a tourist rail service.

Trevor Mallard, acting Finance Minister, said: “In making this decision… Cabinet recognised that there was no prospect of the current Overlander service becoming commercially viable. It was not a fuel-efficient operation and at an average passenger rate of 50 passengers each way per day, it was used by relatively few people.”

It is cheaper and faster to travel either by bus or plane rather than the 12-hour train journey. “The fares already overlap with airfares, and the reality is that the service is just not well-used. It can not compete with low-priced air travel and coaches. Cabinet considered the regional implications of ceasing the Overlander service and accepted that the current bus services run by the InterCity Group met the needs of those communities,” Mallard said.

There has been numerous petitions from the public and from the Green Party of New Zealand to continue the Overlander train service, including one petition signed by 16,000 people presented at the Parliament Buildings on September 14, 2006. “While there have been a number of propositions about retaining the Overlander service, all of the propositions would require government funding in one form or another,” said Mallard.

Mallard said that the government will only support rail services if it significantly benefitted the community.

The Government estimates that financial assistance to the Overlander train service would cost NZ$1.75 million a year.

“Finally, the government does recognise and value the importance of a viable and efficient rail network in New Zealand’s transport infrastructure. This was a critical factor in the government’s decision to buy the rail network back from Tranz Rail. The government has also committed $200 million to upgrade the national rail network between 2004/05 and 2007/08. A further $600 million has been provided to upgrade the Auckland rail network between 2005/06 and 2009/10.”
